  • Butt Burn!

I know this has been discussed on here before - but I am really looking for a way to minimize butt burn. So far I've put new shocks in back, new springs in front, road pegs, and a different seat. I don't know if my new seat is any better though.

I don't think I'm getting sore from the pressure. I am somewhat of a hairy guy, and I kinda think when I get sweaty it irritates the hair (you're welcome for that mental image). Basically, It seems like I don't start to get sore until I start to accumulate sweat. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's just coincidence.

    Any suggestions?

increase ventilation to the affected area and maybe try a sheepskin cover or a gel-pad. I saw an ad in motorcyclist about some riding jeans that had special breathable material in the crotch that might help.

Got the same problem (and the same image in my, er, well). The hotter it is the worse it got. A buddy of mine took one of those beaded car seats and cut it down and tied it off to fit his seat, says it works great, will not go anywhere without it. I am going to try that when I get a chance.

I had one of those JC Whipme Travelcades, the cover was terrific but the foam underneath was shot. Did not last 20 minutes on a real hot day. Got it re-covered by a local upholsterer, stiffer foam, and that helps some.

I get a little more mileage if the seat is clean, like with Armor All to make it a little slippery to start, and no wallet or anything in my back pocket, and try sitting a little more forward than where you land when you start out. I would start a little back on the seat, then I found myself slipping forward a little, then pushing back to try to stretch my legs a little, then slipping forward, you get the picture.

Some here suggested briefs, some said boxers, some say cotton, some say polyester. I think once you are sweating, it does not matter.

The less you slide on the seat, or your butt tries to slide and doesn't, the better. Try a backrest. I got a $5 Army surplus duffle, crammed it with foam, and bungee it to the sissy bar. Works very well, keeps me from pushing too far back and so I don't slide forward much. Last a little longer.

Sheepskin worked a little too, but once yer butt is sweaty, and the sheepskin is sweaty, well sweaty butts don't slide well.

You could move to a cooler climate too. The longest I last is when it is below 45 F. I can go a long way then.

All of these things may each add a few more miles to your ride, but if you are like me it only delays the inevitable.

Oh and someone here I think suggested I lose 70 or 80 lbs. Haven't tried that yet...

        Butt Burn

Fabric-wise, cotton or Coolmax (though I don't know of any Coolmax underwear. Also try mixing baking powder and cornstarch in equal amounts and applying it generously. Cornstarch is very smooth and baking powder absorbs odor (well it works in the refrigerator.

I've been sweaty but never had butt burn since putting a Russell Day-Long saddle on the bike. My longest day in the saddle was my trip to San Jose last September, about 450 miles. I stopped regularly about every 100 miles for gas and water (It was HOT!) One stop of about 40 minutes for lunch, one stop of about an hour to visit a friend. Total day in the saddle was 7AM to about 5PM. I was wearing cotton underwear, powder, jeans and cordura chaps. I had on Coolmax-based socks (Cruiserworks) and my feet were not damp when I removed my boots.

BTW - commercially, a baking soda/powder mix is called Shower to Shower. I use it every day.

For CoolMax type undies, check out Sierra Trading Post . I really recommend synthetic base layer. In mountaineering and hiking they often call cotton "death cloth" because of how poor of a job it does holding warmth in the winter when wet or wicking sweat in the summer.

I did a nice little ride today (100 miles or so) and it was low 80s. It is beautiful here in KY this time of year.

I used to do "a lot" of bicycle riding/racing. The shorts used for that are lycra with a padding in the crotch designed to wick moisture away and provide padding for long hours of riding.
I'll try a pair on my next long putt to see if there's any difference.

I'll vouch for the beaded car seat cover. Got mine at K-Mart for $9.
Gives you air flow and allows you to slide around. There is a company who sells them specifcally for motorcycles, I'll post the site when I find it, I believe they were in the neighborhood of $40

IF you find that I would appreciate that link. I just stopped in at Wally World this morning on my way back from Buffalo, they had the beaded car seat for $10. I was thinking of cutting one down, but when I say all that nylon going through all those beads....

The site for the beaded seat is http://www.sampson-sporttouring.com/[/URL]. The one I bought at K-Mart was sewn where the back joined the seat and was easily cut apart.

                    Thanks Bruce!!!

I saw the same one at K-Mart. Thought it might be too wide even after cutting it in half.

                          K-MART???

Not really. Too bad they don't have bike stuff at Wal-mart like they did in the 80's. Even if it was Dorcey and ching shien or whatever, It sure was handy back then. I guess what I want could be called ALL-MART

Just got one of those Sampson beaded seats. Rode for about 3 hours on Sunday, and although it was only a little hot, I noticed the difference. I like it!
