OK heres the problem. I removed the oil pan on my 79xs11, replaced it with a new gasket and coated both sides of the gasket with Permatex just to make sure it didn't leak. anyway, my brother snapped the last bolt in half. my question is: can I let it go and save it for winter (assuming that there is no leak now) or is this the kind of thing that can't wait. I plan to just wait on it and see if it leaks but I don't want to have it blow off on me while driving down the freeway either.

As long as it doesn't leak, it probably won't cause any problems as all it does is hold the oil in. Mind you, you will probably forget about it come winter time... I know I usually do, no leak, out of sight, out of mind.
Personally, I would take the half an hour and drop the pan again and get the bolt out and replace it.
And get your brother smaller wrenches.....Brian

Your brother sounds like one of my friends. I decided to be a nice guy and said I'd sync his carbs for him on his Nitehawk 450SC... this bike requires you use the screw in adapters to sync, so I put them in finger tight and synced the best I could...which wasnt very good as is bike is in severely horrible condition. So, at the end, I asked him to get the adapters out while I took care of my tools.
Big mistake.. before I could say "Wait, don't do it!" he had grabed a set of pliers and was wrenching an adapter out...it broke in half, as the adapters are made of brass.
For the next hour, we tried to remove the pieces...never did get them all out, but it's still running....1979 XS11F Standard - Maya - 1196cc (out of order)

No leaks no problems. Although I do have another concern now. In order to access the bolts to remove the oil pan I had to remove the manifold pipes. I put them back on but it looks to me like the center pipes aren't all the way in even though the screws are in tight. It started up just fine and doesn't appear to have any leaks in the exaust but I'm still concerned about it. Do the inside pipes go in all the way like the outside pipes do? I took them off at night and I don't remember what they looked like originally.79 XS1100F "JINGUS"

Do you want it done right or do you want me to do it?
