I am trying to buy my original 79 SF from my buddy but he is holding out on me. He also has a 80 MNS rotting right along with my old bike!! He's one of those types that does not get rid of anything. What a shame because he is disabled and I know he could use the money. Good luck finding a good deal on a Special.

              Keys

I have found that your Yamaha dealer can still get keys for your new prize. Lost keys meant I had to pay $8 for a new set.....

I would think that the center stand wouldn't bust through, and would be a much more stable base. I have a piece of steel under my center stand...

Thanks, but talking to the dealers around here, seems they are no longer able to get the older blanks to even be able to cut keys. So looks like I might need to remove the ignition switch and take to a locksmith, or see if the keys can be cut with the 4 digit number on the lock face.
I guess I am a bit confused about what the keys even look like as the Ignition switch key slot has straight sides, and looking at the tank key slot it has a zig zag Look to it. and the side cover is even more different lol

Each lock should have a number on it. That number is all you need when you go to the dealer or a locksmisth. You can compare the numbers on all the locks to verify that they all still match, but the important ones are the ignition and the gas cap. The helmet lock one is probably the easiest to remove if you wanted to take that one into the dealer/locksmith to make sure the key they cut actually works. My key blank has a code on the head that says "X118 YH49". I assume that will tell the dealer what blank to use. I know for a fact that the blanks are still available. Perhaps your dealer is just too lazy to get/stock them?

Anyone else have non-factory keys with codes stamped on the head like that?

Is the number on the face of the lock, where the key goes in? or is it stamped somewhere else? I found some numbers stamped on the bottom of my ignition switch, are those the ones? I would like to get a better key, mind is cut out of a subaru blank and is getting pretty worn...

On mine, the number is on the underside of the switch. It's a piece of clear tape with VERY faded numbers on it. It took a lot of different lighting options for me to figure out all the numbers. I have never looked at my other locks to see the numbers on them, but you might check on those for a better view of the numbers.

                            Hello again XSives

I might have ran into a big time snag on my new project, The infamous TITLE.

As of now the current one is not to be found, and the person that actually had the bike titled (Big Dales brother, who had passed away also) his daughter is not very helpfull to get a replacement for me. So looks like That is kinda of out the door.

But I was thinking what are the odd's of me finding and buying a really bad basket case parts bike or a partial bike. But with an OK motor and frame but with a title which is basically what I need.

obviously would be looking for a 79 XS1000SF

                            Thanks again all of you.

                                Bill,

We are not typically THAT nit-picky, typing is NOt my profession for sure!!

As to your dilema, I guess your engine is shot? I know Andreas was listing a frame for sale. Depending on your state and such, not that I would condone such activity mind you but one might be able to buy a frame for the title only and use that title to get a tag for the bike without ever changing the frame out. Yes, if you ever have a problem with the bike being stolen or something I am not thinking of that would require you to show ownership, you would be screwed. I do know that as I bought my bike in state, here in Ohio, the DMV has never seen anything but my title. And shoudl the PO-PO pull you over for some "spirited" riding, I have never seen them check a vin. (yeah, I've seen this scenario go down more than a couple times)

An engine seems easier to come by than a good frame or a titled frame.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
