Although the SHO was impressive for a V-6, I wouldn't call it a Mustang eater. The 5.0 had more HP, quicker 0-60, and quicker/faster 1/4 ET times. To say there were no Automatic transmissions to hold that power is also laughable. The 5.0 LX was an automatic and was actually a tad quicker than the GT due to less body weight. And up against a MODERN GT..... probably not a chance even if they stall at the line! lol.

So, all things being equal, your SHO is going to get eaten... though people can outdrive others in a lesser car.

But as Montreux_Blue led to... the Buick Grand National was the bad boy of the V-6s at the time and would eat these others up easily at a rated 245hp for the turbo model.

Although having high performance is a great thing, that performance is dropped into one of the ugliest body style of cars, in my opinion, that was made.

I remember reading about the Shogun in Hot Rod mag back in the early 90's when it was first built. That car is just plain sick!!

The one I pictured was the rare GNX, they made 547 of them in 1987 only. It was underrated at 276hp/360 lb-ft and ran low 13's in the 1/4 mile!!! I know it's not front wheel drive......... but it has a turbo!!!!!!

I'm glad I sold my 83 Regal that I wanted to convert into a GN many years before you met me, didn't want you to think I had an ugly car.

I've taken tint off a few cars and off rear defrosters. Usually you can peel it off in one big sheet on a nice hot day and then use lighter fluid, goof off, etc to remove the sticky film. You can use a blow dryer or heat gun to heat it up to remove it on a cooler day.

Did you say SHO was "one of the first affordable high performance sedans aimed at the young married guy", I think there was better options out there. I'm sure the SHO is fun too though, just not as much!
            GNX
I had one of these, not the GNX but it was an'87 Grand Nat'l...it was fast...very fast and I was and still am enamored with it. As they said at Buick "Fast with Class" These weren't stripped down cars...they had all the options,pw,ps,ac,pdl, posi rear..3:42 gearing ( I think)etc...so those 245 horses out of Turboed 6 cyl was dabomb...BTW the GNX was conservatively rated at 275 hp...Mine had that awful purple tint that a previous owner put on..I took it all off...I had it a couple of years and decided to sell it...got all my money back as well...One day I will find another...I see them frequently around here..and beauty is in the eye of the beholder...so it was a beautiful car to me.

              Hey Bennie,

I have an 84 Olds Cutlass Calais. It is of course the twin of the GNX except it was stock with a 231 and 2:56 gears. It now contains a 502 ramjet, with a TH400 tranny with shift kit, run through a Currie 9" Ford with 3:73 gears held in place with Hotchkiss 4 link with air bags in the springs. The interior is bone stock with the exception of a Hurst his/her shifter and of course the stereo.. GNX eat your heart out!

Amazing how much you had to do to overcome what Buick did from the factory...

The weight might have a little to do with it.
