  • CPU sick

Just to let you know that my CPU is failing, I'm no whiz on these things but I'm getting warnings about settings, it also fails to shutdown, wont reboot, so if I'm gone for awhile you'll understand it ain't by my choice.....keep it going long as I can.
Then save my bucks for a new CPU.

Id check the BIOS settings, save em, if necessary replaced the battery on the MB, reinstall the OS, etc.... doesnt seem like a HW faliure.

      CMOS

Xactly where I went! CMOS system settings, BIOS, there were a lot of settings that did'nt make sense so I "optimise defaults" and saved settings.....still cant get the computer to shut off other than holding in the off button for 4 sec. but at least I can still get on line.....

Enable ACPI in BIOS. You can also set the button to instant off. Now when u press the power button once briefly, the windows should shut down and computer too.
What kind of a system are we talkin bout here anyway?

Bruce, I have had this happen a few times in the past and it's never been a hardware issue that I determined to be at fault, always a software issue. What operating system are you running? Win95 and 98 will install right over top of themselves, not sure about the later versions of 'doze. Sometimes this is enough to replace/recover corrupt files and solve the problem. It also keeps your same settings so you don't have to reinstall all your other software as well.

You say it only acts up when you go to shut down?
              I've got a solution...
              Leave the thing running!!

                CPU sick

Doesn't sound like you have a cpu problem. PC's are what I do for a living so as a fellow XSer I'll gladly help ya with this.

First question is what message your getting exactly? does it say CMOS sumcheck error, hit F1 to continue or <delete> to run setup?

2ND is this. can you get into windows ok and then your getting errors? if you are, are you running an Anti-virus program that you update weekly? have you done the latest windows updates? Have you downloaded Adaware and ran it for internet viruses and pop-up and tracking programs? If your running those and your still getting errors then you may have corrupted windows. It happens alot with the Microsoft OS's after 3.11 and before NT/2000.

You really should update your system anyways. CPU's are maxing at 3200Mhz now, minimuim system ram for XP/2k should be 128m DDR. Check at Tigerdirect.com for barebone systems. They have about best prices out there unless your a reseller. Here's a link for that area of their site http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...tlc.asp?Id=31. I see the best deal they have ATM is a XP1800 AMD system for bout $200 which isnt bad. By buying a barebones all you need to do (assuming you have a PS2 mouse and keyboard already(little round plug about the size of a dime)) is drop you sound, video card, modem, and Drives into it and start with a fresh install and drivers.

If you need to save your pennies to get that but need to redo your system you can reinstall windows over your current one. that doesnt alway fix the troubles but it usually does. Just remember when it asks if you want to replace your existing operating system say YES.

Hope any of this helps you man. If you need to feel free to email me and i'll get back with you usually the same day if not sooner.

                  old n slow

Thanks Cuda for the directions, yeah I could use an update here, my system freezes up quite often while sending mail or trying to get into the forum then I have to reboot and start over.....I had a virus update until about 3 weeks ago then my Norton scan dissapeared, no trace of it at all in my files, I think Norton reposseed it!

I used to get fatal errors but those have stopped....I got request to go int CMOS or was it BIOS and check my settings which I did and reset my"optimised defaults", its working a bit better but this is the 3rd hard drive in this machine since new, perhaps the whole thing is getting weary....

I will stagger along with this PC until I have all the bike stuff I need first....I got my priorities.....Thanks again and I will email you for some advice later date....Ride safe, have a great summer.
