This site may help with some of the questions. For sure it is not all of them but a few with the serial numbers are there. I found it interesting.

I own 000555 and 000852 and I found them within 20 miles and 2 weeks of each other.

Several years ago when I worked at the hospital, I was checking out the bikes in the parking garage.
There were 2 Yamaha Road Stars that loked nearly identical. I looked at the serial numbers and they were one number apart. I guess one had followed the other since birth.
The two owners (both worked at the hospital) didn't know each other and really didn't care about the number thing.
So much for the bike brotherhood in some cases

I bought one new in 1980 sold it in '86. The one I have now bought a while ago serial number 4H3001396. Seems there is a lot more than 250 '80 models.

I’d take a nice 78 standard over a midnight any day! Or even a 79 special!

I really think the '79 Special is my favorite. The Midnights never grabbed me.

The MNS for 1980 and 1981 had their own model number designation only. Yamaha did not use serial numbers specific to the MNS either year. There are no 1-250 serial numbers for the MNS. YAMAHA did make a total of 500 MNS US models for 1980-1981. There was not a separate assembly line for the MNS.
