As a holder of a Pest Control Advisors license in California I have to have regular continuing education classes.
On a recent seminar one of the speakers talked about Bats. Obviously the subject of rabies came up.
The longest known incidence of contracted rabies from exposure to symptoms was a bit over eight years. It was a boy who was bitten in Guatamala as a youth and came to the US. While here he developed the symptoms and died. Rabies travels through the nervous system and he was originally exposed by a bite on his ankle.
NOTHING you want to mess with.
Your local veterinarian was most likely vaccinated for rabies while in vet school. I think it is manditory for them. All vets I know here have been.
If you have animals, dogs or cats and a rabid bat or other critter is found on your property the local health department will likely demand that your critters be put down if they are not currently vaccinated for rabies. Even if the animal is an inside animal. Happened to a local cat owner. Inside pet not up-to-date with vaccines.

Look at it like this...I think you are good to go if any more bats commit suicide in your vehicle.. Ask the doctor.
