  • One less bike in the garage

    Sold my XJ today.

Sorta conflicted about it but this should make it better.

    Picking it up tomorrow.

I think the XJ will be going to a good home. The new owner is friends with a member here (I missed his screen name but I am sure he will chime in). So hopefully two more active members here in Kansas City. And I might get to see the bike from time to time if we can get them riding with us.

It is amazing how much you get attached to these machines. But I still do have the midnight.

    New bike

It's always hard to let a bike go, but it went to a great home. And now a new member. I will get with corey for your # so i can score those tires. Thanks again for the great bike my friend is so happy.

I hope he enjoys it. Glad you joined the site, hopefully Corey will as well. Alot of knowledge and great people here. There is getting to be a pretty good sized crowd here in Kansas City. Good people to ride and hang out with. All are fanatics about these bikes of course.

Check out the Talihina Rally thread in the rallies section. It isn't all that far from here and is a great time. Good chance to meet alot of the other members here.

Congrats Harry, on the sale of your XJ. Although I understand the sentiment about seeing it go...

I DIG your new FJ!!!! Sweet!

Think you'll ride it to Talihena, or will you take the MNS?
Reason I ask... I'd love to get a chance to ride that FJ!!!!
I remember when those first came out... that was the new "hot ticket"...
All the cool new cladding and colors...
Seems like it wasn't too much longer and a couple of my buddies rode up on new Interceptors... one had a 750, the other was the 1000RR.

Me... I was ridin' my Yamaha 650 Special... no way to keep up, either...

          Thanks.

I have no idea if it would be ready for a long trip by then. Plus, I have no idea how comfortable (or uncomfortable) it will be on long rides. Guess you will just have to make it to KC sometime.

            Good move

I have one of those in my shed, you have gone from a "s&*t is this going to go where I want it to" to a rocket that feels like it is on rails (compared to xs). Re-geared mine, went to 225 kph (139 mph) in very rapid time and still had more left, took 1 tooth off front, not much slower, just gets there quicker. Comfort factor on longer trips is good. some of those down here that have not been flogged have run over 300 thousand K's (186k miles) with no more than regular maintenance. they can be prone to gearbox issues similar to XS's if flogged.

I am looking forward to getting it here tonight. Should be a fun project at the very least.

                  Harry,
I'm really hacked that I didn't get to make it there this time... but the replacement part is on the way!!! (WooHoo!!)

I definitely am looking forward to meeting up w/ you guys soon!

Any idea what the rear wheel HP supposed to be?

That really is a good lookin' bike! Pretty clean...

If she runs as good as she looks, we might have to see if you "upgraded" or not one day... a little XJ-FJ comparo might be interesting...

According to the specs I saw they are supposed to have 125hp at 9000 rpm. Not sure what that would translate to at the wheel.

I got the bike home and charged the battery for a little bit. It fired right up so I took it for a short ride to see how it ran. The idle is really low (not sure yet what it should be set at) and it stumbles at low RPM's, possibly because the idle is set too low. I think a carb cleaning is in order. It has a really nice Corbin seat and a pretty loud super trap muffler.

It pulled real strong with no apparent problems. There are definitely a few cosmetic issues but they will wait until it is running right and I get a new rear tire on it. Overall, .

sad to see the xj go. ok, well, i never actually saw it in person but the stories were good. can't wait to see the fj in person. sounds like a very bittersweet series of events.

Getting sweeter by the day. Put some miles (only 75) on the FJ today. It is coming along quite nicely.

                          Nice FJ!

Harry good grab there...this looks to be an '84 or '85...as by '86 it was bumped up to 1200cc's...I had 2 of these check my sig...anyways they have sooooo much torque..they just keep pulling and pulling and pulling...the only negative for me was how much vibrations get thru to the handlbars...it was enough to put my throttle hand numb and senseless...The FJ motor is essentially the same as the XS/XJ1100 except the FJ's have 5 valves per cylinder if I am not mistaken...so good on you for getting a barn burner...ride it in good health...FWIW idle should be 1100RPMs.

                            4 valves

Per cylinder until they released the FZR's. then they made the 5 valve bull****

It is an 84. When I got it the idle was real low but it would fire right up and run. I bumped the idle up to 1000 and it was ok. Had a stumble at low RPM's, just off idle to around 2000 rpm. I put some seafoam in the first tank and ran it that way. The stumble mostly went away quickly but it was still somewhat sluggish at low rpm.

Today (after about 165 total miles) the idle finally came up to about 1800. I stopped and adjusted it back down. This thing friggin flies. Wow what a difference. The seafoam did it's job nicely. I am guessing that the pilots were somewhat fouled and they are finally cleaned up. Pulls strong from idle to redline now. I will probably still get around to pulling the carbs and cleaning them, but I don't know if it is really necessary now. I love seafoam.
