  • Potential XS11 Buy, need your guys opinion

This is a local buy for 500 bucks, 79 XS11. It's sat covered for the last year but isn't running right now. I went buy to take a look at it and here are the obvious negatives: 93,000 miles, the carbs look like they leaked gas in the owners attempt to start it since the smell below them is fresh, the hoses on the oil cooler on the front of the are shot and are covered in oil residue.

From you guys that have gotten these fixer uppers, what am I looking at in time and money? Take a look at these picks to help

Well, it IS a complete bike. The carbs obviously need work, but that's to be expected. Do you know when the last time it actually ran was? I paid $500 for mine, and it had not run in over a year, and I ended up putting at least another $300 into it before it was rideable. If it looks good to you, go for it! Just remember that it will take some work, a bit more money, and a lot of elbow grease. Might try to negotiate the price down a bit with the seller. maybe see if he'll take $400 or so, but that's up to you.

Doesn't look to bad. In better shape than either of mine when I bought it. Is there any way to do a compression check before purchasing?

Ok, that's what I was figuring. I'm prolly gonna offer just 350 and I'm hoping they'll deliver it since I don't have a truck. We'll see though. I'm going by there today again since he'll have the key so I can listen to it trying to turn over, see how much gas leaks, and check lights and controls. I'll keep the thread posted. It may have also been sold by another party that looked at it after me. I had first dibs but I wasn't sure if I wanted it right then. We'll see. Thanks guys.

It is complete.you could part it out for more than that.I havent paid more than $400 for a non runner.Only you can be the judge of what it is worth to you.
I would offer about $300.You can always go up from there.

My SG cost $300CDN, hadn't run in 3-4yrs, but it cost me nothing to get it running, just cleaning.

After I knew it would run, I spent money doing a proper tune-up and maintenance, new tires etc.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

For $500, I'd do it. That looks like it will clean up right nice with a lot of elbow grease and a few duckets. The big thing on restoring it is to make sure those carbs are as clean as possible!

Most expensive fix I see is the 4-1 muffler looks like it's about to break in half there at the rust point. Oil cooler lines are cheap. Exhaust headers can be cleaned up and powder coated pretty reasonably.

Straight up above where the rear brake pedal is is the clutch cover. Straight above the clutch cover is a flat spot on the case with the engine ID #. Up on the triple tree (At the top of your forks behind the headlight) there will be a paper-looking thing with the bike's serial number on the left side (As if you were sitting on the bike) and it will be stamped into the metal on the right side. See if the numbers match. Although 93k miles isn't exactly low mileage, there's many out there with a lot more than that on them. It all depends on the owner, and that one looks to be in pretty good shape.

The bike really does not look that bad! It depends on how far you want to go for restoration but from the pics, does not look like it would take a whole lot of cash to get her rideable.

You can go lower than that...

                            Hey,

Just was thinking you could offer like $200 to start. I always start really low, and unless you really need it, you can walk away if their counteroffer is horrible. I just bought my XJ1000 for $200 and he was asking $400.

Nice job on that Faith. I think were lucky that the XS's are not as well known as some other bikes.....helps when people think its just an old bike.
