  • Minnesota to Utah Trip

Six days riding, 2600 miles. It was a great expirance! The last time I road any distance on a bike was 1972 for 750 miles. I split the ride each way into 3 parts. Staples, MN to Grand Island Nebraska, Grand Island to Laramie, Wyoming, and Laramie to Bountiful, Utah. The bike ran great. Only problem was a blow out of my rear tire on I-80 12 miles outside of North Plat Nebraska. I stashed my gear in tall grass along side the highway, and limped it in. 12 noon to 5pm cooling my heels in a Harley/Yamaha dealership while they chased down a tire and tube and worked me into their schedule. Here are a few pics from the trip.

Very cool. Sorry to hear about the blow-out but at least you were able to get it to town and replaced.

I guess stuff happens. New tires (Conti-tours) with just a few hundred miles on them b/4 the trip. I had just passed a semi and was pulling back into the right lane doing 80 mph when it blew. I was dang happy when I got it stopped without loosing it. The rest while anoying, was just life. At least it happened that close to a larger town.

I'm with Progressive. I have collision coverage, which allows me to have roadside assistance.

I never thought about having collision on that old of bike. I’ll check to see what it will cost me. Might be worth it just for the roadside assistance.

              Thanks,
              Bob

                A splendid trip.

Your photographic essay of your trip sure brings back memories. I take the same route myself when I travel to the beehive state. I like old "Abe" sitting atop that steep pull up to Happy Jack Road between Cheyenne and Laramie. Good shot of the Devils Slide in Utah too! Journeying on the old XS is always a blast and you've got me thinking of doing I-80 west again. Thanks!

The trip was a lot of fun! The only thing that could have improved it would be to ride with others.

I thought about roadside coverage when I was sitting at the side of the road wondering what to do next. Not sure I would want a wrecker to pick up one of my bikes. My expirance is that more damage occures. Motorcycles aren't very tolerant to being picked up with a hook. I am still going to look into it!

When I checked with progressive, they said that the covered amount and of course the premium would be based on the value I declared because of the age of the bike.

Yep. I told them my bike was worth $1500. That way, if it gets totaled, that's what I'll get for it, minus my $250 deductible.
