In what states can you get a clear title from a bill of sale? I have 2 bikes I bought as parts but now have everything to get them on the road. One bike was found in a barn and can't find any record of a previous owner. The owner of the barn used the farm as a rental property and has no clue how long its been sitting. It does start with the kick starter. The second bike is the one john and I bought. I found the po but he's not willing to pay for a duplicate title. will cost me anouther 200 to get a title. can be done but looking for cheaper ways of doing it.

I've registered a horse trailer that had been sitting in a field for at least 10 yars. In California, if the vehicle has been sitting for more than 7 years without the title being paid it falls off the books. I had to take the trailer to the DMV to have them do an inspection. They then re-registered with clear title even tho the previous owner was unknown.

Why not just offer to pay the fees for the duplicate title?Or does the PO just not want to deal with it?
I don't know about Illinois but in Washington you have to be the legal owner to get a title.
You could tell him that if he doesn't help you ,you will get a lien against it and call the state patrol. They will take it and he will be responsible for towing and storage plus the lien. That stuff is hard on his credit(if he has any) and would be in his best interest in wanting out of his name.80 SG XS1100

Maine is one. You would get it registered there. That registration served as title on a 77 XS750 I bought with bill of sale. Owner was deceased and no estate. I opted to go through International Title Service for $165 which got me registration and plates. This was a year ago and I just rolled it into a Texas Title this year.
If I was closer I might have drove there and done it myself and saved some $.Richard

You can check here http://www.dmv.org/ the couple states I checked that I'm familiar with it seems pretty accurate.
New Hampshire is one if the vehicle is over 15 years old.
Now sales tax to pay here but property tax would have to be paid not sure how much that would be.
For the money if you were gonna be riding it the ITS deal doesn't look bad it includes plates for a year.
I may be able to do it here in NH I'll have to check and see, what it would cost to turn the paper over.Russ Neal

Indiana??
Indiana is pretty lacks on this stuff. I looked at a bike there befor eI bought my11, an XS850 actually. The "Owner" had taken it in payment of a debt and did not transfer the title, he had the title signed by the previous owner though. Seems to me they just needed a Bill of Sale to transfer title.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Alabama is one state that will do a bill of sell. You license it there and then you can take that to your state and they will honor it and issue you a title. There was a guy on ebay offering this service for around 125 I think. That was for cars. He may be cheaper on a bike. Or maybe a member on the site here that lives in a state like this can lend a helping hand. JAT.
Good Luck!Chris

Well it actually is true.I have bought several vehicles over the past few years.
And I have had to go through a lot of grief to get paperwork on a few.And unless there is a new law I'm unaware of(and that is a possibility) you cannot do it.
Now, you can get a hulk slip which is so you can have a vehicle removed from your property. But I'm not sure you can get a title with that.Originally posted byCrazy Steve,
I don't think that's entirely true. You can supposedly get a 'conditional' title if you have possession of the vehicle but no title80 SG XS1100
