  • Which one?

Recently I acquired a Yamaha Xs1100, 1982. How can I find out which model it is?

Check the first three digits of the VIN number. Somewhere in this site (sorry but I don't remember just how to get to it at the second) is a list that will tell you what you have.

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!

You can check the serial number on this site, but I can tell you now it's not an '82 XS1100. They didn't make the XS1100 is '82. It could be an XJ1100 though.

Check your serial number here... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=396

Yes, pictures please. We all like to drool over new found (or even old found) bikes.

Matter of fact, I ran into a guy at a party for my sister having gotten married a week ago, and while I knew him from somewere else found out last night that he had a 78E back in the day. We talked a little about how the front wheel can lift a bit if you roll on the throttle to quick in first gear. He did it with his wife on the back, as he said "it was a fun test ride, I had to go right back and buy it".

The 82 model year they did switch to the XJ Maxim. However, depending on when it sold, it may have been titled as an 82 but be an 81 XS. Pictures will definitely help identify the beast.

Is that possible? I thought the titles always went by the model year, not the year they are sold. i.e., the automotive model year starts in September of the previous callendar year, but even though you buy a 2009 vehicle in September 2008, it's still titled as a 2009.

The key word is AUTOMOBILE!!! Motorcycles are treated differently by most motor vehicle departments! Some States don't even look at the "Date Of Manufacture" on the bike!

Never underestimate the power of human error!! Depending on who is working the day I go in, my license could indicate I am 6'5" at 120 lbs with purple eyes! (I am "vertically challenged" at 5'-10" and have not weighed 120 since I was about 13 I'd say).

If you show up with a "New" vehicle in October of the year 2008, some clerk could easily decide you have a 2009 vehicle and write it up that way. Especially back in the early 80's before Mr. Gore gave us the Internet so we could look up what the VIN indicated. Heck I knew a guy that in the mid 80's got 20 diff drivers licenses from the same DMV shop. That is another story though.

I have an 82XJ 1100 but the Title lists it as a 82 XS 1100. All the numbers match title to frame. I wonder if the title can be changed to say XJ instead of XS. Nothing against the XS but what is right is right. It is a bit confusing to anyone that doesn't know any better.

Mine just says 1980 Yamaha MC, but my insurance card says XJ instead of XS. Interesting since not only does the VIN match the paperwork, but I don't think they even made an XJ in 80?

None of the insurance companies I have used list an XJ... so I have a 1982 XS insured that they DO show. No big deal either way, as the smallest scratch on these old things and it's more than likely a total loss according to them. Their biggest concern is simply going to be the year, VIN, and engine CC's.

According to progressive, they will cover it for the amount I declare it to be worth (primary because of age) along with a visual inspection for damage, and what I pay is based on what I value it at. I suspect that it would have to be somewhere in the vicinity of the NADA value or have a certified appraisal to collect, but the rate they have quoted me based on a value of about 2k seems reasonable, and it includes roadside assistance (which with a bike this age is probably a GOOD thing to have).
