Again I ask as I did on the thread regarding fire arms"is any one surprised?"I would ask any of our more liberal members and President Obama supporters to explain this to me and make the case why I am required to feed the person taking the photo of our First Lady.Terry

You know fellas, on my trips as a missionary to some very poor places on this earth (China, Burma, Chile, Nth east India) I noted there always seem to be technology around be it Tv, mobile phones (cell) and then there were drugs, grog etc even in remote villages, theres a pattern if you can see it, we as humans will fill our hearts and minds with anything that will distract us from our daily misery whether we can afford it or not even going hungry as long as we can be entertained. Yea so he's got a phone is he a phoney? I don't know but I rather my taxes pay even the few slackers if it helps some one in real need maybe you or me in some future time (Heaven forbid) Lets not us in our prosperity become arrogant and without mercy huh? bless ya guys and him too.

Bless you as well Ralphy.I'm not against feeding anyone who is hungry. But I believe charity and giving should come from the heart and be voluntary, not with money that a government has extorted. If I were to steal money from you it's still stealing regardless of whatever good things I do with the money.Thank you for your missionary work and your devotion to helping those less fortunate.Terry

You know, that goes right along with the folks standing at the expressway off ramps and street interesections asking for money. See the same ones there everyday with signs like "Just evicted, please help!" And they're still there two months later with the same sign. One group here in town followed a guy who does that and filmed him getting into his Mercedes and driving to his $250,000 house. When you work in a city metro area, you get ALL kinds begging for money.

Funny but true story, a friend of mine used to be foreman over the kill floor at a local hog plant. I toured the place and saw the work, nothing in there looked fun to me. He had ALOT of turn over. So he would see people sitting with signs of will work for food and such and he would tell them to show up at his plant at 7 AM and they could work for money. Every one of them turned away or walked away from him before they ever knew what he wanted them to do or where he worked. It was a good job with good benefits to! They just wanted a handout, not a handup.

Knew a street bum when I was in college, we would give him a beer every now and then. He just wanted to live like that, his chosen way of going through life. One day he showed up with a grocery bag and made us all itallian hogies. He spent three hours bumming the money to buy that stuff. His way of paying for the beers we gave him.

As to charity, I do believe in it. I have built HFH houses, put over 200 hours in one where I wound up the lead carpenter for the house. (by default not knowledge). But enjoy every minute of it and the impact it has on a neighborhood is amazing. I just refuse to give money. IMHO they already have proven they either do not want what they claim to want or cannot manage money anyway, so why waste more on them. Give them food, and build them a home with a payment plan they can afford. And yes, like that picture there will ALWAYS be those that abuse whatever system is implemented. But it would be to politically incorrect to kick his but out with no food.

I had a homeless guy a few years ago on a blustery evening ask for a handout as I was out of the store. He said "I'm not going to lie to you, I want to get a couple of beers for the night". I gave him my spare change, hey, he was honest about it. He was that sort, he was a regular and would help people out with their carts and bags, that sort of thing. Interestingly he was always there to help others when they needed it, he just didn't want to have to deal with a job or a place to live, a good cardboard box was apparently good enough for him. Some just need a bit of help.

Also remember on the cell phone thing, there are a lot on the streets because of losing their home and let me tell you, losing your home makes it hard to get a rental too, at least around here most places want a better credit rating to rent than it takes to buy, and if you lose a home to foreclosure (even if the lender lied about the loan) your in pretty deep at that point. There are many in this area living in shelters and/or tent cities who have a full time job, but can't get any housing, even as far as stuff has come down, IMHO at least in Kalifornia it's still too high. Frankly if I could find a job ANYWHERE but here, I would be really considering it seriously. As it is, we are living paycheck to paycheck, with no reserve. I know most are in pretty much the same boat, so I'm not really complaining, but the only way we are going to fix this country is from the ground up. I'm lucky, I have a decent job, and we do something that I can feel good about, but I fear for where things seem to be going. I don't think this recession (pronounces depression IMO) has even really gotten started yet, but time will tell.

You know, I am certain my grandfather feared for where this world was going, and I know my father feared for where this world is going. the older you get the more you "fear for where this world is going". Having kids tends to do that I think. I find that the "bottom up" approach only goes till you find the folks who live in fear of losing the cushy life they have. So I gave up on fixing the problems. I live my life as I feel it shoudl be lived, lead by example, and teach my kids to live properly. That is about all I feel I can do.

As to living in tent cities and such, I have no concept of the cost of living in Kal-i-forn-ya..I know it is alot higher than here in the midwest. But I do know that there is always someplace to rent if you have a couple hundred a month around here. It will be in an area you wont feel safe at night, and it will be as rat and insect infested as you can imagine, and it will have marginal electric, heat, and no AC. Most include heat and AC with the rent, electric phone and cable are on your own. Yes, another sad testament that cable is now considered as indespensible as electricity. But it will be shelter and have damn good locks on the doors and windows.

Did anybody catch what's on the menu at the edge of the picture? What in the world are they doing serving gourmet food like mushroom risotto? We need to help the helpless, but we need to be not wasting our money on fance stuff and provide them with good solid healthy food.
