  • ATGATT for Kids?

For those of you who wear ATGATT for yourselves, do any of you ride with your kids as passengers? If so, what do you do for their gear? I have a son who is almost 11, and is tall for his age. He'd love to ride, but I won't take him out until I have the proper gear for him. I know there are plenty of folks who don't ride with passengers, or at least not with kids, but I also know some do, so this is directed at those folks.

I ride with an armored jacket, full-face, gloves, and long pants EVERY time I ride. I wouldn't let him have any less than that. Where do you suggest I look to find riding gear like that for my kid? I'd need a youth helmet, armored jacket and gloves at least. I can figure out the rest .

I buy all my jackets from e-bay. Just look for a "used" one like my tourmaster (still had the tags on it). Picked it up for $30 shipped.

      Hi 'Bug,
rider gear for riding, no matter who, no question. Thing is, kids keep growing so buying used gear is the only economic answer for the short time it'll fit them. BTW, if you think riding gear is expensive you have never bought hockey equipment. Hockey parents organize swap meets to buy hand-me-down outgrown equipment for the season or so that it will fit their kid then pass it on. I have never seen a kid's biker gear swapmeet though. Maybe you could start one?

I'm glad that my kid has never really shown interest in sports for that very reason. I'm no jock at all (I even hate football), so it doesn't bother me in the least. Unfortunately, the folks around here are more "anti-gear" than anything so I really doubt there are many people who shell out the money for youth gear. Cycle Gear has a local store here, and they sell NO jackets for kids, and only about 4-5 options for street helmets. Lots of off-road stuff, but I guess there isn't much demand for street gear for kids around here.

Hey Bug,I choose not to carry kids on the street.I worry about the terminal velocity of other vehicles.(That's my choice)However they love going for a spin on the trails.Via 4 wheeler and dirt bike.Ebay and Craigs list, are a good place to start.Make sure they're protected.Like me I don't think you could live with yourself if someone got hurt!!! I bought my son his helmet, jacket, and gloves from Ridegear.com. He loves them. I just went through the closeouts and found a great deal. I might have paid 100 - 120 for everything including shipping. Their site has been down do to new updates but I think its back up and running. He has out grew the last set but I passed them onto his aunt who loves to ride with me.

I found my boy's jacket and helmet on Craigslist. The only thing he doesn't have is gloves but considering I only take him around the block that's not bad, I still make him wear his gardening gloves though. Both times I've taken him for a ride, before he gets on the bike I make him go through the checklist of equipment and tell him "All the gear, all the time". He understands that he has to have it all on before we go anywhere.
If you don't own a fire extinguisher, do me a personal favor and go purchase one... immediately.
