  • Got my Trunk Installed and Painted

Now that my bike is officialy fully dressed, I thought I would post another set of pictures of the basically finished job. When I go out for a ride this weekend I figure I'll take my calendar submission pics, in the meantime here is the machine completed.

The tail lights on the trunk are hooked up a little strange so far, all of them are wired as marker lights, but only the outer two are working as brake lights for now. Seems the ground on the #2 light assy (counting left to right) has the ground connector broken off, there is a reasonable amount of material there so I figure I'll be able to solder on a new ground connector now that I found my soldering iron, but for now it's grounding through the brake filement so I didn't hook #3 up as a brake light either for balance.

So, would this be a good time to hook up a wig wag module for the trunk lights to make me more visible?

you can try that, or do what I've done. I have two of the oval truck lights mounted in my trunk. Just connect the two round holes on each side, and your done. The LED's make for a BRIGHT brake light, so the idiots can see me some of the times...

            Looks Awesome!

Any plans for pinstripes or side cover emblems?

Yes, I still have the vetter emblems, and while I was planning on hand pinstriping them, Craig Vetter told me via email that he plans on having reproduction decal kits available soon. So I am trying to work the side cover emblems into the budget (hopefully soon) from that Aussie company that makes them, and I have to restore the Vetter emblems before I put them on, and the pinstriping has to be on before them go on as they go over the pinstriping.

I'm planning on redoing the paint with two part base clear over the winter, so I'm not done quite yet, but I'm feeling good about it. I gotta find out what the chrome is going to cost to get fixed up though, as it's not too good (on the bags and such) so when I repaint with GOOD paint, I want to get the chrome redone at the same time (I understand it will probably cost me the same for one piece or 10 since they do it in batches).

Very nice! That's exactly the setup I am looking to put together for my MNS, except in black and gold. I like the contrasting colors on yours too. I think a nice pinstriping job would really make it pop though!

Looks great! I have the same setup. PO had replaced the std. lights on the trunk w/ LED's... makes a big difference. Wigwag idea sounds good too.

Bob - Does that mess with any of the other electrics on the bike? I've heard that replacing things with LEDs does things like killing the auto-cancel on the turn signals.

The brake light portion won't, but replacing the turn signals will if you adjust by using an electronic flasher, if you use a load balancer (really just a resister across the line with the LED light to create the same load, meaning no savings). Personally I have never liked the auto cancel as it always cancels too soon for me, so I changed to an electonic flasher already. But doing this with the brakes won't affect anything other than the load on the electical system. The wig wag goes on the brake circuit and you then divide the brake light for both sides so when the brake is applied they flash from side to side for a few seconds and come on solid. The units I have looked at can do several patterns depending on how many lights you have. Since the stock taillight has two bulbs I might go for a cross pattern wig wag (one side top on while the opposite side on the bottom is on and then switching back and forth. If I get it setup and working I'll have to shoot some video of it and upload it with a link here.

Did he replace the light assemblies with LED type or with LED replacement bulbs? I figure I can either get 1157R replacement bulbs online for about $8 each plus S&H or I can go down to Kragen auto parts and pick up a pack of two 1157R LED bulbs for $17 but no shipping (I do have to pay sales tax though) and I get them right then and there, no waiting. That said I figure I'll need to order the 1157A LED bulbs online since I can't find them locally, and the same place has 90 deg 1156A replacements that should work well on the rears.

Now, who had the information about that HID replacement kit on the site? I understand that I can lower my current draw with that, but will have to bypass the RLU if I do, seems worth it to me since I figure I can see if the low beam goes out and switch to high beam myselfe, especially since IIRC the HID replacement I read about on here is a single bulb that moves forward and backwards to switch between high and low, so I hear that carrying a spare bulb for them is a good idea.

Oh well, gotta go out and wash it up and then go out and get some good pics to submit for the 2010 calendar. It may not be the best looking bike on the site, but it's my daily driver and don't look too bad from 20 feet.
