  • This is what XS11 is all about

Using the site and its members are invaluable to all XS owners. Here is another great situation that XS members have had, or wish they had. My Bro inlaw, Tom, AKA, EagleTom, has a recently acquired 1980 XS 1100 that would not run. We called, the allknowing 3Phase, aka, Scott, if he could help us out with a phone dialog. Next thing we know, he drives 200 Miles to help Tom out, and within a diagnostic hour, IT LIVES AGAIN. The culprit was a bad pickup, not the usual pickup wires, of all things. With 3Phases expert guidance a lot of other small things were repaired. Of course the celebration was a visit to the local casino, all expenses paid by EagleTom. An excellent use of members helping each other out with hard won experience working on these machines. BIG THANKS to 3Phase, today, he is THE MAN.

Thanks, Mike, Garth and Mo but Tom did most of the work!

It just took some basic troubleshooting and another set of eyes to find the bad pickup coil, then put the big parts back (with some minor technical difficulties involving a crossthreaded oil filter bolt; incorrect muffler flange studs/nuts/washers from the Yamaha dealer and a trip to the local hardware store to buy the correct ones; two aftermarket air filters that wouldn't fit the air box; hanging the mufflers in the correct position (d'oh!) without a crossover pipe or any muffler bearings) on the bike and it fired right up!

        It's a runner!

        Regards,

        Scott

          Thanks Scott

Well I finished all the little stuff last night except the muffler cross over. I'll try to get it to the welder today after work to get it finished. Then take it for a shakedown ride and hopefully on the road this weekend.

          Thanks again Scott

Shsh! It's all lies made up by my friends. Seriously, Tom did most of the work while I helped.

Getting Tom's bike running was only one reason for stopping by. It was pretty hot so just some bottled water, no beer was necessary and the ride to Harrah's casino and buffet afterward was not expected. It took most of the afternoon so if we were drinking beer it might have taken a 42 pack (beer math) but we wouldn't have accomplished quite as much.
