So my Bobber is getting really close to being street legal and I was looking into the vertical mounted license plate with the old model 'T" style tail light mounted on the side of the bike above the plate but was discouraged when the Florida plate laws were brought to my attention. Something about the plate being centered on the bike, mounted horizontally to be read left to right at least 18inches above the ground. That sucks! I'm at a loss... So am I completely out in left field on this one or does that sound right?

hmmmmmm
This is what I read...
"not higher than 60 inches and not lower than 12 inches from the ground and no more than 24 inches to the left or right of the centerline of the vehicle, and in such manner as to prevent the plates from swinging, and all letters, numerals, printing, writing, and other identification marks upon the plates regarding the word "Florida," the registration decal, and the alphanumeric designation shall be clear and distinct and free from defacement, mutilation, grease, and other obscuring matter, so that they will be plainly visible and legible at all times 100 feet from the rear or front. Vehicle license plates shall be affixed and displayed in such a manner that the letters and numerals shall be read from left to right parallel to the ground."
So, while it is against the law to have it turned vertical, it does not require it to be centered.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

This is from the same state where they issued my "antique" motorcycle license plate, with the sticker-and the sticker goes dead center of the hole punched in the plate for the mounting bolt. And the lady at DMV said "Its OK to punch the hole, all the cops know about this screw-up, its been this way for years".
If it was two years ago, I'd say you were fine in any typical urban FL county-there was plenty of crime to keep cops busy. Now every municipal employee is trying to justify their existence in the front of 40% budget cuts. Traffic enforcement, once laughable, is so strict you can't even speed across alligator alley. If it ain't right, or even if it is, and looks different from your typical harley, you'll spend time explaining with humorless men (and women) with an IQ of 70.1978 XS1100E "in progress"

Well maybe I can save a little money if I don't have to worry about buying a fender, as long as I get a horizontal plate, and tail light?

that's where a rotating part can pick up anything that falls on it to draw it into a narrowing gap.
That's you riding that bike and hitting a bump. Your arse lifts off the seat, the wind force moves you back
and gravity brings your arse down onto the back tire just behind the seat allowing the tire to grab your pants
and drag you forward so the seat's rear edge rips your nuts off.
OK, that'd calm you down a lot but you wouldn't like it.

Ah, Nuts!
Fred,
I've always been able to count on you to set me straight with out any sugar coating! I appreciate it too, I'm pretty glad that your concerned about my well being in just about every time you reply to one of my idiotic threads. I think that possibly having my nuts ground off with a high speed tire counts for least 50 cons on my pro and cons list for a fender. So far that makes 1-58 pros vs cons. Having said that, I guess now I'm looking for a round bobber fender that fits a 130/90-16, 6 inch wide fender, everything I've found is the flat trailer fender style.
Thanks again,Last edited by tbishop11; 06-08-2009, 08:02 PM.

Fred,
Wow $400 is a little crazy I found one here http://www.cyclexchange.net/Fender%20Page.htm and one like it on ebay but they are both flat. One even says it fits the 130/90-16 like a thousand dollar suit but when I called them they said it was a flat fender too. I know that there is something out there its just a matter of finding it without paying a arm and leg for it. Thanks again for your help!
