It's a Go for me! I have to work Friday until 11am mapquest is showing a 7 hour ride so I should be pulling in around 9 at the latest Friday night if thats ok. I'm going to pack tonight so I can leave from work. I will be taking 80 to 35 and down. I'll bring my side covers and maybe if we have time do a fuse box conversion. I really don't like the mess the Po left me!

      Good deal, see you tomorrow.

If anyone needs to get ahold of me, my cell is 816-820-1723. If I don't answer, leave a message. Hard to talk on the cell while riding. LOL

        Harry,
As of right now, no. But I'm workin' on it. Ivan sent me a note said he had one for an XS he'd let me have, but not sure if the XS-XJ stator coils interchange? Anyone know off hand? I always heard they were different.

Cody knows of a guy in Stillwater that we need to take mine to, and see if it can be repaired, and how much... but we've both been really busy this week.

ZR... in one way sorry to hear your plans may not work out to Seattle, but then again I'm not! LOL Hopefully that'll give us more chances to meet up!

(If my bike will stop misbehavin', that is...)

          Hey guys,

I just stocked up on fuses and fuse blocks. $15.00 in parts, and 1 hour labor for installation. Rob, I don't think I have any fork seals in stock, but I can get them, and we can install them in the next few weeks if you will be in the area.

Have the Colortune, syncronize gauges, and just about everything we need for carb tuning, and engine tune up. Also have oil filters, so service work is also doable. Any other repairs that can be done in one day, or if I am forgetting anything, we will try to get you taken care of when you get here. Looking forward to seeing you all!

I dunno if we'll have time for this one, but my first gear decided to start going out this week! I had already done the 2nd gear fix in early spring, but I may not have done a very thorough job on 1st gear. I know it's possible to do 1st gear without dropping the oil pan, so maybe we can squeeze that in. If not, I can do it on my own next weekend instead. Other than that, I think all I really need is a thorough carb tuning. Sync, colortune, all that good stuff.

            See you guys tonight/tomorrow!

Not sure how you would dremel first without removing the oil pan. That would be something to see. It takes me about 4 hours start to finish to get the countershaft out, ground, and back in. If everything goes well.

First gear slides out when you take the cover off the left side. You can do the dremmeling of the internal part through the opening. It's listed in the "addendum" to the 2nd gear fix in the tech tips, IIRC.

No, that is 5th that slides out, but you would still need to pull the oil pan to get the shift fork out of the way to get 5th out. 5th meshes with second. 1st is on the other side and meshes with 4th.

Oh.. yeah... Oh well. Maybe I'll dig into that on my own NEXT weekend then. I really don't feel like tearing my tranny apart this weekend. I'll stick with the Carb tuning.

I just wanted to say I am glad to have met everyone who attended our little gathering this weekend! Thanks especially to Bigfoot and his family for putting me up, and Russ79 for the use of his garage, tools, and elbow grease.

We actually did manage to get my 1st gear taken care of, and spent most of Saturday doing so. Unfortunately, when I removed the pipes to get the oil pan off, the right muffler fell right off! Russ skillfully welded it back on, so I can retain my coveted OEM black MNS pipes. We found the oil pump idle gear had lost it's snap-ring, and later determined that it had actually lost both the external AND the internal snap-rings/washers (the internal parts were missing from long ago, before I had removed it when I did the 2nd gear fix). Thankfully, I didn't have to deal with it exploding in there before we caught it.

After all that, we went on a 100-mile ride through some high-speed back roads, and I had my introduction to the concept of "twisties". I've never had my bike leaned over so far before, but it was fun.

Went back over to Russ' this morning, and after struggling with a loose connection in the starter circuit, Russ and Bigfoot synch'd and colortuned my carbs for the first time since I've owned the bike. Russ had to turn the mixture screws out to over 3 turns to get them adjusted right! Evidently, 1.5 turns isn't ALWAYS the right number

Unfortunately, we discovered that I also have an oil leak, coming from the gasket where the middle drive meets the engine... We had run out of weekend by then, so that means that I have a project to work on NEXT weekend! That will be my first attempt at removing the rear end.

Thanks again to everyone, and I hope we'll get to meet again sometime soon.

Enjoyed the meeting and thanks to russ for the emblems and fuse cover. Would of loved to been able to spend more time but had some family stuff I had to do. Dad had a 80th birthday so I couldn't miss it. Thanks to everyone for making a new guy feel welcomed.

Glad to hear you made it to your rest stop. How do you like that windshield? did it make it any more comfortable to ride? Your mileage was about the same as mine (~33mpg) . I had kinda hoped that tuning the carbs would have increased my mileage, but it only went up by about 3mpg. I even verified my mileage with the GPS to be sure my odometer was correct (it was off by 2 miles over the 201-mile span I recorded). I'll just have to keep working on it, I guess! , I guess!

                                Wow, Bug...
I'm glad to hear you guys found the problem with the oil pump drive gear snap rings before you got the chance to "TEST" out the durability of your 11's engine too! That's a test I don't recommend... (even though I now know first hand they will pass, if neccessary!)

Hey... 3 mpg just for tuning is a pretty good jump! Sounds like an improvement in the right direction!

We scored a stator for mine off of ebay for $20. Hopefully that's all I'll need to do to be back in business soon.

Sorry I missed out on all the action this time! Sounds like it was good, and twisties are awesome, aren't they??? Love 'em.
