I know in New York State, they had that stupid rule. MC learner must have a properly MC licensed 'sponsor' within 1/4 mile at all times while riding. I had no one i knew that rode, so when i got stopped I'd be 'hey, he was just here.." Worked every time. When I took my MC road test in 1974, I had to hire a driving school instructor that had the MC endorsement to accompany me to the road test site! He drove my dad's car, with the examiner in the passenger seat. They followed me during the test. One beep, turn right, two beeps turn left and so on. Bizzarro!

Of course things may have changed since then what with the MSF (no road test), so i'm not sure of the permit rules.

Just checked, NYS is still in the stone age. From the NYS DMV site:

Motorcycle Permit Supervision, Restrictions and Practice: If you drive a motorcycle with a permit, a driver who is 21 years or age or older and who has a valid motorcycle license from NYS or another state must supervise you. The motorcycle driver who supervises you must remain within 1/4 mile of you at all times. To learn about all the restrictions for learner permits and Class MJ driver licenses, see the DMV brochure

Here in Michigan a person with a learners permit is required to have a licensed motorcyclist within seeing distance. I thought it was dumb but it is so. If ya get into trouble what is a licensed motorcyclist within seeing distance gonna do anyway? watch you get into trouble???

Blue Giant, if you're talking about coming into the totalitarian state of New York (I was almost going to say Screw York) I wouldn't advise trying it, being that you are out of state (out ofcountry forthat matter) you would be brought in front of a Majestrate who knows less than us about the law and probably be fined heavily or bound over til a real judge can hear rhe facts. And what happens to your bike? It's impounded! If you don't have a licensed driver for it, it sits! Don't want to throw cold water, but one should err on the side of caution! Land of the free, my ass!
