I'm beginning to look at these XSquisive machines more and more as abandoned, rare creatures waiting to be rescued from the shelter and their certain demise....to be listed as parts. I hope to rescue more than just one. Maybe start a shelter myself for em.

I hear you... Sometimes I look at my day job and think, "I wish I had as much fun doing this as I do working on my bike!" I wish I could afford to grab up several of them and bring them all back to their former glory. Problem is that they're often worth less as a finished bike than the cost to buy the bike and all the parts to fix them.

    1981 XS1100LH Midnight Special (Sold) - purchased 9/29/08

From a completely objective point of view, I tend to side with the Gestalt theory...."the sum is greater than its parts." Although, in reality, you are sadly correct!

        CatatonicBug,

Couldn't agree more. It's tough seeing "parts" bikes in better shape than the bike you are working on.

I think I am going to be riding a bike that is going to be on the road because of the sacrifice of better bikes.

Feel like I should be buying the parts bike and using mine as a donor!

But hey! It WILL be on the road.

Almost makes me wish I lived closer to the east coast....Almost.

This makes me think of that show "Dog Town" with all the neglected dogs out in the desert getting a lot of TLC so they can be pets again. I wanna make a "Yammie Town" for these bikes to go and get better so they can all drive around and be happy again... I know - I've watched "Cars" a few too many times...

You know what? I don't recall seeing any motorcycles in that movie now that you mention it. What a rip

You know, got me thinkin of that movie, "Pretty Woman" and no not about the woman, a really odd thing for me. Reminds me of what Richard Gere (or however he spells it) did. As long as someone is more interested in the money than the entity, things will be torn apart and sold off piece by piece. No offense intended toward our members who sell parts.

Well, I guess I would be one of those members.
No offense taken but I will have you guys know I have never taken a whole bike or motor apart to sell in pieces.
Everything I sell has been found as NOS, pulled from a wreck or taken apart by a previous owner.
                peace,

Hey, without the supply of parts, most of us would not be here, or have a daily rider. I know I wouldn't.

Seems like I am not the only one who goes on a guilt trip about these bikes. I have mentioned in other threads, that is exactly why I chose not to use my XS1100SH as a parts bike. I didn't have the heart to put the "ole dog" down.

Now I feel like I've stabbed my XS1100SG in the back for buying this '09 Raider and jumping ship to the new bike.

Definitely! I know there are times when a bike is simply non-repairable. When Mother Nature has just been allowed to take over or a wreck has reduced the bike to a pile of interconnected parts. Nothing wrong with salvaging those. But like was said earlier, it's sad to see that the "parts bike" is nicer than the one being repaired.

Kind of reminds me of the old trucker saying, "Some things never die, they just get Peterbuilt."

The reason why most just part them out is because nobody wants to buy the complete bike for very much but you can part them out and make lots more it is going to come to a point that there wont be very many left because of that.

If you have an old bike that is parted out...all you have are old parts and prolly not worth much...granted some bikes need to be parted out in order to keep the best ones going. I dont think I would ever part any bike out...unless the bike was totaled in a wreck. But then again how many times do you see people here and elsewhere looking for replacement parts? Quite often so like it or not the demand is their thus is the supply.
