I just thought that I would share this article for those who are interested about what you put on head before you go out riding. The article is a little lengthy but I think it's worth the read.

    Here.

    Anyway, enjoy.

    BlackD...

Solid info. Good to know. I am disappointed however to see my brand Mfr. punked out and wouldn't participate (Bell). But, based on it's construction, and that it's a DOT only which cost me $80, it's probably one of the better ones. Guess to be sure though, I might need to check out a Z1R in the future... Thanks for the tech piece. Helps to know before blowing a wad of $ on a sticker rating that means the opposite of what it boasts.

Wow ! Take the time to read this entirely. Seems like every time I think I have something figured out, somebody blows it up. Thanks for sharing this important info. Rick

After I had initially read that article, I was glad to see the results. It makes perfect sense, too. When I race a car in autocross, it's mandatory to wear a snell rated helmet. Makes sense; if the car starts to roll, it's very likely to hit your head on the same spot twice(thus the need for padding to absorb the shock more than once). If you hit your head in the same spot twice when falling off a motorcycle, I can only assume that you're falling down a hill in a forest.

Any chance CatatonicBug can repost that chart he posted in the other thread reference helmets? I'm talking about the distribution of impact on the helmets chart. It would go well with this thread.

It was that picture that actually reminded me of that article. I didn't want to hijack the other thread so I thought it would be best to start a new one. I agree that Catatonic's picture fit perfectly in this thread. Thanks guys.

                Good info

Best arguement I've seen for a full face helmet.

No kidding. I pondered the idea of a modular for a while, mainly because I like the ones with the built-in sun-shades that flip down inside the clear sheild. The problem with modular helmets though is that the chin bar is not a permanent part of the helmet. It's just thin plastic that will break away in a collision, reducing protection. This picture really convinced me to stick with the full-face.

That is a chilling report. Just the effect of age on survivability of a "moderate" impact.

If you wear a helmet, you should read this!!

I posted this same link when the 'What Kind Of Helmet Do You Wear' thread was going on, but it got kind of buried in the middle of the thread and not many people noticed it. As has been stated, this is important information, and it's not even that new.

John Force Racing driver Eric Medlen was killed a few years ago while wearing a 'mandatory' Snell helmet, and he didn't even crash. He was killed when he blew a tire just after leaving the line and the side-to-side shake caused by the tire slammed his head into the sides of the roll cage and he suffered one of these brain injuries that this report talks about. He had no other injuries. The NHRA's 'fix' has been to add padding to the inside of the cage. Maybe if the helmet padding/shell hadn't been so hard so as to pass the Snell test he may have survived.

Personally, I will NEVER use a Snell-rated helmet or participate in any activity that requires one.

Actually, he did crash after passing out due to extreme shaking. His brain basically got rattled. I don't think the helmet contributed. It was his brain bouncing off his skull that did him in.

Reports say he was being vibrated rapidly through 18" of gyration. Some astronomical amount of G forces.

                            It's official

I just heard on the news tonight that the State of Missouri has officialy repealed the manadatory helmet law! Anyone over the age of 21 is no longer required to wear a helmet in MO, unless they are travelling on an interstate highway. I don't get it... People just WANT to die?
