Does anyone know if there is a shelf life for spray paint in cans that have not been used? There's nothing on the label to indicate a shelf life but there is a manufacturer's date on the bottoms of the cans.

As long as the little internal mixer ball still rattles, it should still be good. I've seen cans where the paint has settled out badly enough that it won't 'remix', but that's rare.

We had spray cans in our shop at work that we used to mark our tools with and some of the cans that are in the shop were there before me(over 8 1/2years ago). I would just say test the paint on a piece of scrap before you use it. I don't think I've thrown out a can of spray paint that still had some left in it to be honest with you.'81 XS1100LH (almost ready)

Hey Rob,
Just did a search, and varying opinions...imagine that... stated from 1-3 years, one site was for Rustoleum with a 5 year warranty/shelf life!
Some said that a problem was possible leaks of the propellant, so that there wasn't any to push the paint out with!
Others commented about the possibility of the tints that were used could separate, break down, not hold to the true color intended, etc.!
Also storage conditions were important, try not to expose to extremes, hot or cold.

OK, well that's good to know. I have a few cans of clear engine coat here that are about 2 years old that I want to use up.

never thought none about.....
best advice, don't buy more that what you need. Before putting left over on shelf, turn upside down and depress to clean cap and prevent cloging. If it sprays like crap at next use, chunk it and go get more. At 2-5$ a can, who cares?80special w/79special motor.Never ride faster than your angel can fly!!

Crap, I wish it was 2 - 5 bucks a can and if it was I wouldn't even question it, I would just buy fresh every time. Up here the high heat stuff can go for 7 - 15 bucks depending on the quality and temp rating.
