for those of us that can,t afford new tools or cannot beg borrow, or steal, but have a bit of ability to knock something up, which all of us have, perhaps we should start a home made tool box, with photos or drawings
I,ll start this off from a post by Randy about valve spring compressors .
Have made my own, it,s a bit rough but works a treat----- I can,t make the link work properly so either highlight and do what you need to do [cause I don,t know] or go to my site,http://steptoexs11.webs.com/apps/pho...lbumid=5487005

I like it!... It looks like a must have for anyone who has to do lots of valve adjustments. Looks like it was fun to build.
Good work Steptoe, way to use your noodle.

                I like the rolling magnet.
Only change I would make... or mention... tape a paper towel (or maybe a coffee filter) over the magnet when picking up metal filings. A lot easier to remove the filings from the magnet by just removing the paper section than using your fingers to swipe off the filings.

That rolling magnet is a cool idea!! And I suppose it becomes much more necessary when you run around your shop barefooted.

                    I like homemade tools...

I won't spend money if I don't have to, and in particular won't buy badly designed, cheaply made, or too-expensive tools if I can make better...

                    [IMG][/IMG]

Engine pulling hook to fit Holley/Ford carb bases, motorcycle shock disassembly tool, and a 'specialty' knife to cut masking tape on a bike wheel so I got a uniform parting line on both wheels.

                    [IMG][/IMG]

Sandblasting cabinet built from two 55 gal drums and an old electrical panelboard cabinet...

                    [IMG][/IMG]

Bases for my mill and lathe. Didn't save any money here, but the offered 'factory' bases were for short chinese people; too short for me at 6'. These are 5" taller, have more storage space, and were built from two 'Boeing surplus' metal office desks with some added square tube and angle. I wish now I'd made 'em even taller, but oh well...

                        Hi Steve,
Although el-cheapo copies of vise-grips plain ol' don't work, cheap wrench sets do have a place in my toolbox.
For ~$1 a wrench I have no qualms about torching a wrench all pretzel-shaped and grinding the head down to get at a hidden fastener.
And your still-too-short bases? Stand them on short lengths of 4x4?

Here's a simple tool that i made. It's for holding the internal damper rod on FJ1100 or 1200 forks. Made from a swingarm bolt from an XS1100, which had a few faces ground onto it, then jammed into an old socket wrench piece and then fitted to the extention bar. It might work on other forks but i don't know which.

This also fits the fork caps on the FJ forks; I made one pretty much indentical to yours

But I don't think that swingarm bolt is off a XS; mine was off a XJ650...
