Antique License Plate?

I just put my bike on the road at the DMV. They asked me if I would like the regular plate or would I like the antique? I said what do you mean antique? ha ha lol The lady said that thirty years and older gets an antique plate if you like. So I told her heck yeah!! So now I am the proud owner of an antique motorcycle........ Does anyone else have an antique plate?

Here in Virginia, we can qualify for them with only 25 year old bikes. However, you may want to check with the DMV about their use, because here they are designed to be FREE/Lifetime plates. However, they have stipulations where the machine isn't to be used for daily use, but more for occasional, weekend type of use, even possibly limited mileage allowed as well!? Perhaps they don't have those type of restrictions for your state?!

I've seen a few folks post about getting them for their bikes.

They are BLACK here, and you can't get a personalized one, so that's why I haven't gotten one, I like my GDZLA plate!

Here int he great state of Ohio, if you get a Historical plate (our version of antique) it is relatively sheap and or close to free, however, you can ONLY drive to and from a show or to, from, and in a parade!! Now, granted it is pretty easy to define your own version of a show, but....with my luck, the cop would follow me just to get me.

My plate is antique, but only because I've had it on my bikes since 1984!

I get almost as many people asking about the plate as the bike.

Here are the laws for it in MO. Much like TC mentioned:

To qualify for historic license plates, a vehicle (passenger vehicle, truck, or motorcycle) must be 25 years old or older, owned solely as a collector’s item, and used for exhibition and educational purposes.

Vehicles displaying historic or antique license plates may be driven:

1.To and from exhibitions and educational events without any mileage limitation;
2.To repair facilities within a 100 mile limit; and
3.Up to 1,000 miles per year for personal use.
The owner is responsible for keeping a log of the miles driven for personal use each calendar year. The log must be kept in the vehicle when the vehicle is being driven on any state road.


Historic license plates are a permanent registration and cannot be transferred. If you sell or dispose of the vehicle, you must return the plates to the Missouri Department of Revenue.

So, as long as you stop by any kind of motorcycle or motor vehicle exhibitions or rallies, you should be ok!
Show and shines, parades, should alos qualify.

Plus, another 1000 miles for whatever.

Do you also have to buy insurance? If you do then the whole antique plate idea is a waste of time.

I checked with the DMV and the antique plate is no different then the standerd plate other than the old status.No price breaks or milage stipulations,and no insurance is required for the sunny state of Florida.

In California, it's pre 1942 only bikes that are eligible for the antique plates.

Does taking Hardleys to school count?

In Oklahoma You have to keep your normal plate, then pay an additional $17.50 a year for a "classic" plate that is exactly the same except it says classic at the bottom. Also I am unsure if you can even get them for motorcycles.

They have them here in WI, but there is a clause that specifies no changes can be made from what came on the bike.

Not sure how they propose to enforce that. We have 2 year registration here that really costs very little, so I see no advantage.

You can also get forever car plates for +25 years old, but can't operate them in January or some such. Like I'm going to take my '68 Bird out in the salt and slush!

Anyhow, in Kansas if you can find a plate from the year the vehicle was produced, IE an 81 plate for an 81 vehicle, you can use that as opposed to the normal plate. Not sure if it works for bikes, or if there are price breaks and mileage restrictions. If there are, they arent enforced around Hutchinson anyway.

How can you tell what year a plate was made in?? Don't the stickers change every year (or every other year)?

Here in MO, they just changed the format design of the plates, and they are forcing everyone to give up all their old plates and use the new ones once they re-register.

I liked the way they did it in CA, where the plate stays with the car, and if it's still an old Black plate, or even a blue one now, you know it's a classic car, simply because the plate was put on that car decades ago. Here in MO, the plate goes with the owner, and the new owner must get brand new plates every time, unless they have plates from an old vehicle to transfer over to it.

Here in PA the bike has to be 25 yrs or older to get antique plates.It cost a one time registration fee of $100.00 bucks and the dmv needs four pictures of the bike and as long as you keep your insurance the same without changing it to antique there is no restrictions on how many miles you put on the bike. And you also dnt need safety inspections anymore

I just looked at Oklahoma's DMV website, and in the antique vehicle section, (25 years or older) you have to sign the following statement.


"Affiant further states that the vehicle described above will travel highways of this state primarily incidental to historical or exhibition purposes only."


To me, this states that you can say that you PRIMARILY do ride the bike for these purposes.. but the day that cop stops you was the first time you've taken the bike out for just a pleasure ride. The tag is 17.50 a year.. or $84.50 for TEN years (8.50 a year)... nothing in between. It doesn't say anything special about insurance.. so since there is a proof of insurance check to get this tag, I'm assuming that you need to have it as normal. Also, there's nothing stated about mileage limitations or having to keep any records.

Any rides to rallies.. you're going to show everyone your bike.. so it's for exhibition purposes.. correct?
