  • Nice surprise

    So I'm tooling along this afternoon checking out my new jetting, when up ahead I see another guy on a bike. As I came up behind him at a light the rear of his bike started looking really familiar. When I got up next to him I could see it was a really nice XS650. I asked him what year and he said it was an '82. I said 'Mine's a '79', the light changed and away we went. Caught the next light and we started yackin' again. That conversation kept going the same way for maybe 2 miles worth of stops. I think we were both surprised to find someone else on such similar old iron.

    Haven't run into any other 11's (by accident), but I'm always lookin'. What about the rest of you - any close encounters of the 11th kind?
    I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

    '79 XS11 Standard, Jardine 4/1, Dyna DC1-1 Coils, 145 mains, 45 pilots, plastic floats - 25.7mm, XV920 fuel valves, inline fuel filters, speed bleeders, Mikes XS pods, spade-type fuse block, fork brace, progressive fork springs/shocks, manual petcocks, 750 FD, Venture cam chain tensioner, SS brake lines

    Translation;

    "I got to play the "Mine's bigger than yours" game with this poor guy for two miles."

      Closest I ever got was to see another XS (smaller than an 11 though) leaving a gas station down the road from me. I was in my car, so I couldn't get close.

        Tod - lol. You crack me up. Actually I was too busy complimenting his bike, asking if he knew about Mikes XS - stuff like that. Never said anything about size - I was thinkin' it though.

        Cat - Definitely don't see many of us running around. I guess that's why I thought it was kinda cool.

          There are 4 xs11s in my little town, I bought two of them (in town).

          There is also an XJ750 that lives here. It was driven a lot last year, but the guy bought a bigger bike, not sure which one.
          Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

            Last summer, here in my little old stick town of Raymond, NH. I was filling up my bike for a ride when I saw a group of riders heading up to the White Mountains. One of the guys had an XS1100 Special so I had to go over there and talk the poor guy's ear off for a while.

            There is another guy down the road from me that has what looks like a 650 Special sitting in his front parking lot. I've never seen it on the road though.

              I've never seen another XS650 (just sold it last week to a local guy so I will still see this bike once and awhile) and never another XS1100.If I ever do the conversation would last forever & so would the smile. To be honest I never really see any old bikes at all except the odd old harley thats about it. And hardly any of those. It seems to me especially at the local hangouts (timmies in the city) that everyone wants & has new stuff. I think the old stuff has more character & soul myself. I certainly get alot of attention wherever I go when I park the bike or even getting gas because it is old & different. Sometimes more attention than the new high $$$$ ones. Man, maybe character & soul is noticed (heavy thoughts) - Dan

                I haven't seen any other XS11's around, but I have seen a few XS650's and and 850 around. It seems most places I go I get those who come around and want to know about mine, and mine is a 20 footer at least (it just might take more than 20 feet to make it look really good).

                I'll update my avatar and post pics as soon as I finish painting it, not that it's going to be that good of a job, but at least it will be one common color instead of the 4 different colors it is now.
