Please tell me more, the numb butt thing is normally alleivated by a lambswool rug, that we used for a changing rug when the kids were small, but it's not ideal in the rain.

      shorts

I have a set of gel-butt bicycling shorts I wear on longer rides. Basically spandex, with gel insert. Almost feels like what I'd imagine a diaper would feel like, kind of awkward at first, but they do make a difference. Maybe a $20 investment, and no fuss, no muss.

My local Walmart has these seat pads made by Stearns. Apparently not all of them have them though since the guys in Kansas have looked. They are actually made for a 4 wheeler. You don't sit on it and think "ahhhhhh". It's a really firm padding, but after 300 miles this last weekend, I felt like I still could have done a couple hundred more. I sent one to Ivan before our trip and he loves his. Now a couple other of the guys want me to bring them one at the Bob Jones rally next month. They are @ $18 at my local Walmart.

I think I'll be able to move it backwards so a passenger can use it also... you don't sit up on the front of the seat by the tank anyway. It's not a "Gel" seat... but thought I'd post a cheap option.

Good find. You said it's made by Stearns, could you give us a manufacturers model number and maybe a walmart stock number? If you go to your local Walmart and talk to the manager they may order it for us.
            Thanks

The man has done my XJ seat and also my '95 Honda ST1100 stock seat...he has a quick turn around time and is a pleasure to communicate with. If you are just doing the pilot's portion of the seat with his "LD" mods then its $75 not including your 2 way shipping.Did I say he was quick...7 days and it will be back in your hands.
One more note...if for any reason its not right or that you are not happy he'll fix it and prolly wont charge you for it...except for your 2 way shipping....I will once again provide the link...I highly reccommend him...one more thing he does not recover so your seat cover should be in good condition as he'll reuse it.He goes by the name of Spencer, but his real name is Frank

+1 on the Stearns azz pad.

I have to admit I was sceptical at first, but I rode 7.5 hours straight last Sunday, and my feet hurt more than my butt. It is just as Tod said. Not plush comfort, but on the long haul, it is a life saver.

I took mine off due to rain on Saturday, and realized how much that thing really does. I was hurtin with in the hour.

Even the guys with Air Hawks were jealous.

I use a bicycle gel seat under sheepskin. Blue Giant came up with the idea..
Last fall I rode over 800 miles non stop (fuel stops only) and was amazed I could walk up the steps at MartyA house where a cold beer was waiting for me. I have also heard that wicking underwear (LIFA) keeps your butt more comfortable.
                        Is that Searn thing waterproof?
