    For those of you on a XS.. notice any flaw's etc on your bike??

    A buddy of mine has invited me to a 1000K ride. Across the Canada/America border callled D2D.. Dust 2 Dawson..


    Not sure if this XS with old electrical will make it..


    Will a ol' XS with new tires, engine love- make it on the old electrical?? i need to know.. ??! OR I WILL DIE>.

    First thing is to replace the old fuse block with the spade fuses (T.C. sells the new fuse block cheap). You'll need to make sure all the electrical connections are cleaned, and all corrosion is removed. A bit of Dielectric grease helps too. Make sure the battery is fresh, and your charging system is working well. That is one weak point on these bikes - the charging system is just barely enough to keep the battery charged. I'm sure there are lots of other things to think about too, but that's all I have right now....

      If it's only a 1000 kms it's a fairly short trip. Just do your usual tune-up, and clean as Catatonic said.

      I put over 8000kms last summer and I couldn't get the bike to run right... Wore out a rear tire though.

      Oh, and don't assume it will be you breaking down on the side of the road. I've been stuck twice now waiting for my friend to fix his 2008 HD Ultra Classic! Don't think he likes being reminded...

        In spite of it's age, I don't see any reason why a well maintained xs/xj1100 could not easily make such an trip. The question is, will yours? To help you decide answer these questions. What is the general mechanical condition of the bike? Have you ridden it enough to assess it's condition? what are it's known problems? Does it have any ghost, as in unexplained coughs, misses or noises which could mean a break down in the future. How are the tires? How far have you ridden it since the last break down? Have you ever ridden it 1000k without a break down. I hope this can help you decide to go or not.

          I took my old '79, with 80K on it at the time, on a 13 day 7,200 MILE trip with almost no problems. This included an iron butt ride from Stillwater, OK to Cleveland, OH in 23 hours. With just a LITTLE car, these will go forever!!

            Hi Eric,
            Alaska & Dawson tells me you are going to Dawson City Yukon. My daughter has spent the last two summers in Dawson. Dual Sport bikes such as BMW-GS and KTM and Kawasaki KLR are what turn up in town. This is not to suggest that crazies like you and I can not "run what they brung" but the roads are rough to say the least and most not paved. But living in Alaska you knew that They will be pleased to see you in Dawson

              1000 kilometers = 621.371192 miles.

              I did well over twice that this weekend, with much time in the 100+ mph zone, and scraping pegs to beat all.

              so 1000K on an XS = yawn.

                I have often put in a 800-1000 mile weekend on my G with 75k on the clock with no problems (even with the OEM fuse holder). My only issue is oil consumption that will be cured with a top end overhaul at some point. All you can do is prep your bike as best you can and not worry about it. If its gonna break, its gonna break. I have yet to be left on the side of the road on a long road trip. Carry spares, fuses, bulbs, cables and if you have tubeless tires, a repair kit or at the very least, fix-a-flat (will not work with tube type tires). Decent tools will help to. You don't need to carry your whole top box, but a good selection of tools, including metric allen head tool can be a god-send on the side of the road. The most I have had to fix on the side of the road was a loose saddle bag. Duct tape and zip ties will usually hold things together long enough to get home. My biggest fear is a flat tire but have not had one in years, I am sure its the tubless repair kit I carry, it has put a "pox" on stuff that will cause a flat.

                      go for it

                      I drove from Elizabeth NJ to Key West and back with a few side trips totaling about 4,000 miles with not a single problem. I helped 2 other bikers on that trip and helped others in the past. Other than a few flats, Ive been good.

                        haha when I said 100k i meant more like... 1k.. as in 1,000 MILES..

                        450 miles from here in anchorage to FAIRBANKS.. to Tok then dawson?? add about anohter 380-450

                        Edit: and what i forgot was.. 400miles of Dirt... Not many of you are from around here like the Adventure sport riding forums im used to in alaska.. this is a new Step for me.. reachin out to u bro's all over the world and not just the state or the N hemisphere

                          These bike CAN do OK on "dirt" roads. Just try and find a set of tires with a little more "agressive" tread pattern. The speed WILL be slower, but I have put a few miles on "roads" around here with mine. For me, about 35 MPH max was a good speed. I run Donlop E3 front, and E2 rear on it.

                            I've ridden my bike on a lot of dirt and gravel roads in north Idaho with no problems, but the roads were dry, add rain and it gets real interesting on street tires. I would suggest a set of adventure tires if you can find some to fit.

                              Couple guys recommended a set of AVON's .. any of you guys roll with those??


                              Well with a new kind of bike.. a New kind of testing tires shall begin!!

                              I'll read up on those tire's you posted..

                              ( Still need to name the xs!! ) the ol "insert name here" isnt quite ready to be brought down from the bike stand so Tires is not my top priority as of now..


                              Fuse box mod, new battery, new front lamp, blinks, carpy parts, What electrical i want to replace along the way.. then TIRES AND BRAKES BABY!!!
