Yes, free for people to smoke around people who don't, but not free for the non-smoker to complain about it.

I don't care if you smoke or not, either. Just don't do it around me.

For that matter, I don't care if you hit yourself in the head with a 2x4, or snort drano, or jump in front of busses either.

You are free to do with yourself what you will, just don't force it on others.

Well, I really wasn't trying to start a topic on the acual smoking issue....

I've been smoking since I turned 9...close to 30 years...been giving the old colledge try to quitting for 2 years............TRYING A LOT HARDER NOW,
I think I'm just gonna bite the bullet and go cold turkey, starting Monday.

I get that the tax is because 'We will not raise taxes on anyone with income less than $what ever the dollar was....but they need to raise the money somewhere, blah, blah, blah

Here's the thing I just stopped my normal store, OMFG it went up again...
      a 1lb bag was $81.00
or maybe it just wasn't on the shelf when SWMBO stopped, she did have to go to 3 stores to find it

        Hi renegade,
back before cigarettes would kill you and everybody smoked, my uncle Ern worked for WD & HO Wills, one of the the UK's biggest tobacco companies.
All Wills' employees were allowed to bring home an 8oz bag of "floor sweepings" every week. Every once in a while my uncle would come for dinner bringing an at least 2 lb bag of silk-cut Virginia cigarette tobacco and my sister and I would be set over my dad's cigarette-making machine with a box of cigarette tubes to turn it all into smokes. We were 7 & 12 years old fer chrissake! Perhaps that's why smoking was the one filthy habit I never took up.

When Minnesota placed a .75 useage fee per pack a couple years ago, I went to rolling yer own. When this bag of tobacco is gone I am done. Not so much due to cost - I refuse to be taxed in this mannor. A targeted few to carry the load of the many. What ever happened to no taxation with out representation?

You guys sound surprised that the new admin is trying to tax us into prosperity.
Thats what they do spend as much as fast as they can and then figure clever little ways to pay for it.that sucks though.
I quit smoking a little over 3 years ago and the going rate for smokes was about $5 a pack then.someone at work told me yesterday that some places are charging $7-$8 now.I remember back in high school a carton of marboros were like $12.

I don't get into politics - especily on line. It was the other party in Minnesota, a limp wrist do gooder govener that pulled the .75 cent a pack user fee - he doesn't believe in new taxes...

I remember working at a convience store in the late 70's. People were complaining about the price for a pack. Most said when it got to 50 cents they were quitting.

                  25 cents for a coke/pepsi
3 cents to mail a letter
25 cents/gallon for gas, someone pumped it for you, checked the fluids, washed windshield, and you got gifts.
Some of those things go back earlier but you get the point.

                    Hi 62xs,
the difference is that cigarettes give you emphysema and lung cancer while cigars, pipe tobacco and chewing tobacco tend towards cancers of the mouth & jawbone.
The similarity is that tobacco taxes provide funds that the Government could spend on cancer research if they didn't find a toilet to pour it down.

I highly doubt Cancer Research will benefit much...it's too bad, but we know how government works. Pretty much a shell game.

You guys dont need to worry too much about that, most of the worlds leading cancer research is actually being done here and funded by our government anyway.

AMA medical journals will tell you that 8 of the last 10 major advances in this area were produced by Otago University scientists in the South Island of NZ. This has been the trend for the last 15 years or so, mostly because it cheaper to do the research here, and the govt pays for most of it.

Good for you guys, not so good for us... higher taxes to pay for it.

it's good to know that somebody is actually doing something about the catch all killer. I was given the impression years ago that cancer research was a scam and that those in this country at least were not really trying too hard to find a viable treatment for it so as to keep the money for research coming in. are they doing any worthwhile studies on lung cancer over there? it seems that not alot of research gets done in that area as the prevailing attitude is that it's all the victims fault; and where that may have some truth in it, there may be something that could be learned about other cancers by doing some on this particular one, I mean as I understand it, it is fairly widespread. but as the saying goes "if nothing else get you, cancer will" My father died from lung cancer almost 14 years ago (2 - 3 packs a day for 50 years will do that to you) and my mother is still torqued at the American Cancer Society, she got info that put them in a bad light (can't remember what exactly that info was anymore) so when he passed she put in the obit that in liu of flowers please make donations to Hospice of Dayton, she still wont give the ACS a dime to this day, but then again, she's still mad at the Germans over WWII. She's got a good bit of Irish and Scottish in her so when she get a bug in her bonnet, it's going to be there for a while anyway, that's all I got for now, have a nice day and ride safe
