    Blacked out 80S

I have a 80 special that is satin black with brushed aluminum. The engine is gloss black. I'll take a picture if that would help. Rick.

      Hi Austin,
Back in the day we used to paint our cast iron heads and barrels with aluminum paint so folks would think we had all-aluminum racing engines. The idea of a black paint job on an all aluminum engine made me smile when I bought my XS650 Heritage Special which came blacked out but with the edges of the fins polished. Mind you, the Heritage sure looked nice.
Didja know that the original Triumph vertical twin engine was designed to look as much as possible like the twin port big singles that were the most popular engine design of the 1930s?
Didja notice how the modern Japanese big singles are designed to look as much as possible like a Triumph vertical twin?

        I do! I do!

        Well, it's an '80 Special

I've inserted thumbs, just click for larger pic

I painted the timing, stator, clutch and tranny covers black,
about 3 years ago, didn't really prep, just sprayed them.
Still looks pretty good, but I want to strip them and them polish all aluminum parts

I wouldn't say it's a standard thing with me but on special occasions I might drink quite a bit and bla..... oh... never mind. Thought you were talking about something else.

Interesting thread as I too have been thinking about going with some more black for my XS1100SH. I have a maroon tank and side panels. I was thinking black on the top of my engine, the exhaust pipes though I might go with a crome muffler. This is also the bike I've been tossing around the idea of going with the bobber look but I'll probably leave it the way it is...for now.

Still working on mine. The only shiny parts left will be the friction surface of the rotors, and the inner fork tubes.

Maybe 'git 'er done' this summer?

I did mine with 2000 heat paint, just cleaned a few times and wire brushed forever, masked off the silver bits, sprayed and sanded the fins.

That ended turning into this, the black tank was nice, but I really like the burnt orange.

I think I'm about to do it again on the project xs12.
