  • Brake Question

So I replaced my brake pads this weekend. Flushed, cleaned spooge, filled etc... Put it all back together and it all seems to be fine. My question is, should I be able to lock up the front brake? from about 20mph when I hit the front brakes hard, alone, it works and i come to a stop, but for the life of me I can't get it to lock up. Not that I want to, but for some reason it does not seem as sticky as with the old pads. Could I still have an air bubble in there? Is this how it should be? Pulling in on the lever seems about right. Just don't want to have panic stop and not be able to.

Remember that the pads will take a little bit to "bed in" before you get your best performance. I recall that mine took a few days before they started to really work like ai expected after changing the pads.

Old lines will be spongy no matter what you do. Upgrade to SS lines.

This is true even in cars. The surface of the pads are not perfectly smooth, and neither is the surface of your rotors. They have to mesh together, and it takes a while for that to happen. Always give yourself a little more stopping distance with new pads. As for the hoses, I think it's pretty much a given that old hoses will give a lot more than new Stainless Steel ones. If you're looking for super strong braking, that is the way to go.

          Thanks guys,

I did not even think about break in periods, duh. Been a while since i Have done brakes on anything.

I do need to look into SS lines. After new tires though.

Sorry for putting this in the lounge, was not paying attention. It can be moved.

SS lines only move WHERE in the arc of the brake pedal the pads will lock, nothing else.

If anything, SS lines can make it too easy to lock the brakes, thus causing issues on gravel, etc.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

When we used to 'bed' the brakes in on cars,
and ive done the same with bikes.
find yourself an empty road, you want to do bout half dozen hard stops at 40mph and 50mph.

Randy, do you happen to have any good links/sites where we can find them? I have seen them in my scanning the different sites but was never sure just what to order as far as lengths.

Don, here are the measurements i used when i made them. i don't have a supplier, but speigler, russel, summit racing, etc can make them. Also HELUSA (SP?) i think makes them in colors.

                  Standard:

                  M/C - 16"
                  Front Calipers - 22-3/4"
                  Rear: 19"

                  Special:

                  M/C - 20-1/2"
                  Front Calipers - 22-3/4"
                  Rear: 19"
