  • Major Thank Yous

I wanted to take a second to let everyone on the forum know how absolutely awesome you all have been. The bike's up and running wonderfully, thanks to the help of some locals here in KC (Russ, Harry, Ivan, Vince - a great BIG thank you to all of you - you guys absolutely rock!). Everyone here has been so supportive, informative, and all around good-natured about bikes, riding tips, and life in general.

    Kudos to you all!

A couple things I learned this past weekend:
1.) If something's broke, it can be fixed, you just need patience.
2.) It never hurts to ask for help, and sometimes you learn more in the process.
3.) It's not called "riding" a motorcycle so much as it is "piloting" one.
4.) Enjoying riding/piloting in a group is very satisfying.
5.) NEVER tell the others in your group that your speedometer doesn't work.
6.) Going 100+ mph on a motorcycle is fun, but you leave a brown mark down the middle of the road while you **** yourself at the same time.
    7.) See #5.
8.) Despite all the trouble, I am SO happy I have the bike.

How important is a speedometer on an XS11 anyway? These later year bikes it only goes up to 85 MPH, so most of the time it is useless!!

It is very cool to hear about folks helping each other out, good job guys!!

I'm actually GLAD I didn't have one and didn't know until someone told me. I swear I probably went completely white when they mentioned how fast we got up to.

Wolfpaws....last Spring and Summer, I must have asked myself a hundred times, "Why didn't I just buy a new bike?".

Well, I got my answer as I spent the Summer and Fall riding it. I too was so very thankful for all the help I got on this site.

        Enjoy yours.

          about speedos

if it only goes to 85 i usually don't go above 85, I mean sure I'm going over 85 but how much over 85?! If I'm going 120 I wanna know, if I'm going more I really wanna know. bragging rights are nice.

Hey Richard SMoker....I mean Big Dick...

I figured that at 55 MPH in 5th my tac reads 4K and at 70 MPH it reads 5K. Simple math says that in 5th gear 1K = approx 15 MPH. I went another 1.5K on the tac, soooo...yep..I was doin 85 Officer, I can show you!!!

lol that's a problem on my bike though, while my speedo works perfectly, my tach does the jitterbug anywhere above 3-4000 rpm, I have the electrical contact cleaner stuff like it says in the tech section I just haven't spritzed it yet.

I have followed every suggestion on the tach bounce I have seen. I even consulted with the UN, an exorcist, a witch doctor and an indian chief. Mine still bounces and sticks at 1000. no matter how low I adjust the idle, it says 1000.

Very glad to help. It is nice to have another one of these on the road and real nice to have someone in the area to ride with.

I have a speedo, but was really surprised at how inaccurate it actually was until I got this cheap GPS unit. It's probably what's kept me from getting a ticket though. When I'd see a cop on the highway, look down and see my speedo said 80 and panic... I was actually only doing 74mph. For the price I have seen on some of these gauge clusters (Pilot box) you could get a cheap GPS. Just a thought.

But it is nice to have both, and nobody is going to steal your NOS speedo when you run into the store... unlike your GPS possibly.

Not to hijack the thread, but many of use are stuck in town because of this time of year. All week the weather is perfect, but of course no time to ride (other than to and from work) and then it rains all weekend (at least sporatically) preventing any serious riding. And for me, I tend to stay in the vicinity of the speed limit (civil obediance and all that) so having the speedo that goes way over would be a waste for me. I like that it's potentially capable of over a ton, but would not take it there myself (not that I have a problem of getting up to cruising speed in the shortest possible time).

In such matters especially, I drip with sarcasm!! (it's a joke son...I say a joke!)

Honestly, I never go much over speed limits in town and probably slower usually. I am very cautious around the cages, I know alot of paramedics and doctors who have told me about to many bikers getting slammed by left turners and cross street traffic not stopping. So I go slow and keep my spidey sense active! Like my MSF teacher told us "Its ok to be paranoid and think their out to get you!! Worst case your prepared, best case you were ready if it did happen."

You know Tod, I was thinkin last ngiht mine has to be off only I think it reads slower than my actual speed. I was in a 65 zone doing 70 by my speedo on a major highway 3 lanes each way, and I was passing almost everything. If I do 70 in my cage same area, I'll get run down in anything but the slow lane! Anyone else got comparison numbers to mine for revs versus speed in 5th??
