Going to OZ with an XS1100

I will be making a deal to work and live in OZ for 4 years starting this summer and living in Brisbane. I am on the fence whether I bring the ride with me as I know things can be difficult in getting replacement parts etc for XS1100's. The relocation package allows me to bring the bike if I want. Any Aussies near Brisbane who can help with logistics. The next option is to keep my bike here in storage and lease something when I get there.

I'd say take it with you, ride it, that way it won't dry rot sitting in storage for 4 years. However, depending on who they get to ship it over and how, I would remove the parts that can bend/break, like mirrors, turn signals, side covers, etc., and rotate the handlebar levers so that they won't hit the sides of boxes/crates that it will probably be put in. You'll be required to remove the gas and probably the oils also, so you'll want to slosh some oil around inside the tank to help it not rust during it's SEA VOYAGE...I doubt that it'll be shipped AIR! Wrap the tank in a blanket or something to protect the paint finish, etc.. You should be able to order and bring the routine maintanence stuff like disc brake pads, air filters, even oil filters. As for tires, probably not worth trying to bring any, and they'll possibly get old in storage while you're riding and wearing out the current ones.

There are some Xsives in OZ, but it's a big place, check out the member's lounge location threads, and refer to a map! And just think, you'll get your Australia stamp for the states/countries you've ridden in!!!

Aussixs11g lives in Brisbane, rides a modified E I think, he should be able to answer questions about logistsics. I have a nephew living there and been there many times myself. It's a nice clean city of about 1.6 million. Lots to see and do from a tourist's perspective and Grant tells me it's a good place to live as well.

Some good riding roads to be had by going inland an hour or so to the "Glass House Mountains" or up the Sunshine Coast to Noosa and beyond. South is the Gold Coast which is the Tourist mecca, Dreamworld, Movieworld, Seaworld, Wet n Wild, yada, yada, yada. Australia Zoo (Steve Irwins zoo) is not far away and just up the road from the zoo is an awesome outdoor go-cart track, said to boast the longest track in the Southern Hemisphere, If you've got kids they'll love it. I've wiped out a couple of times on it trying to beat my son.

One thing I would definately research is thier "interesting" motor vehicle registration and safety inspection rules. You may find them quite a bit different to Canada and the US.

Take your bike, you'll regret it if you dont when you get there and see the size of the place and the all year round riding weather.

Just in case you're not convinced, heres a couple of pics I took in May (start of Southern Hemiphere Winter) last year.

They are of a man made beach on the banks of the Brisbane river (about 20 feet above river level) at a place called Southbank, 5 minutes walk across the river from the centre of the city and the Treasury Casino

The beach is great and typical of the whole Southbank atmosphere and the wildlife isnt bad either.

with you, you won,t believe the open spaces to ride in.I,m just on 4 hrs nth of Bris,not a lot of super sharp corners up here, but lots of big sweepers to make the most of, PMme when you know what,s happening,[check out MOTEL XS11] in the threads

First it is possible to get bits down under, we aren;t quite that backward. Second, you only get a stamp entering and then leaving the country,no checkpoints with armed guards at the state borders.

I used to live in Brisbane (Slacks Creek, actually) The summer weather is pretty hot, even on a bike, but the rest of the year is awesome.

Just watch out for all the snakes that come out to lie on the road at dusk! the cane toads aren't an issue, just don't try and brake while running them over.

for a Calgarian there's going to be eight years-worth of riding packed into four. If the relocation package will pay the freight, take the bike. If you store it the tires will rot, parts will rust, bad things may happen to it. My son just spent two years in Australia but as nobody was paying his passage he had to pay an appalling price (by Canadian standards) for a Kawi 750 to ride when he was there and sweat bullets selling it when he left.

you,ll hurt someone,s feeling talking like that,,,hey Tuffy winters over now, I had to wear long pants and gloves 3 times this year,it got down as low as 3 degrees but is now warming up nicely.
