One of Burts lesser know bikes, a 1936 Velocette, was auctioned yesterday and sold for $71000. Fortunately it was bought by a New Zealander and stays in the country.

            http://www.3news.co.nz/Video/Burt-Mu...rticleID=95290

While the Hayes family own most of the collection, there are still another 7 bikes in private ownership throughout the country. Mostly english stuff, Velo's, Triumphs, Ariel's, etc. All were modified, and all could go fast.

A Kiwi might be a flightless bird but old Burt sure knew how to fly.

Ironic that all this has come up here bout Monroe, as there is a person on the ST1100 web site that remembers him as a kid. He lived down the road from Burt, and says he was a different sort of guy.

Different he was. I got to know him as a 16 year old apprentice a couple of years before he died. My boss in those days and him were good friends. Grubbiest old bugger I've ever met but he had a wicked sense of humour, and there was nothing he couldn't fix if he had the right tools. If he didnt have the right tools he'd make them if he could. Seen him do things on his old belt driven lathe that young engineers today couldnt do today.
