    Hi Andy,
XS11 parts mostly swap between years and models like LEGO.
You can turn a Standard into a near enough Special or vice-versa by swapping parts around so perhaps Transformer as well as LEGO?
From the photo your bike looks like a Standard (big fuel tank instead of small, rectangular lamps and gauges instead of round ones, front axle below the fork instead of in front, normal front calipers instead of ATE pattern ones plus the plastic bumstop on the seat. And from your feedback it seems the engine has been swapped out. Look for the actual kickstarter pedal. They never were fitted to the bike but the bikes that had them carried them in a clip someplace for emergency use only. Other things to check:- Later sidecovers have round pegs at the top, early ones have slots. Standards have a 17" rear wheel, Specials have a 16". I know you say it don't matter to you but it's interesting to discover what the bike started out as, eh?

I have the kickstarter it came w/ the bike in a box of other parts.

The sidecover on the "drivers side" goes on w/ round pegs and the passenger side I think has slots, If i recall correctly. I know it confused me.

It does have the 17'' rear wheel.

You guys sure do make a guy feel welcome and sure are helpful!

        Andy,
Welcome to the site. The engine number is from a 1979 model bike! You will NEED to look at the frame number, as your bike MAY be a '79 that was not sold until '80, and so was called a 1980 by the STATE!
We ALL know about how smart the States are when it comes to bikes!
The '78 and '79 had the stubs for the kick starter, and it WILL work if the battery is weak! I have used mine a few times before replacement of the battery.
As for the wires, search for wire problems in the threads, and you will probably find people who have already fixed a problem like yours. Ground wires, and corroded connectors are the single biggest problem with a 30 year old motorcycle.

              The motor is a '79. 2H7 02XXXX is 1979, 2H7 000101 is the start of the 1978.
The tag on the left side of the steering stem should give you the month and year built. If it was built after August 1979, it will be a 1980 model. With your engine number, It is probably a 1979.
Another test to how late it is are the rims. Yamaha went from tube type to tubeless rims mid-year of 1979. Look at the spokes on the rims, and you will find some numbers in the casting on one side of the wheel. If there are STAMPED marks that say "suitable for tubeless", you have a later bike, or someone has changed the rims. A quick way to find it on the rear rim is look for the tire locks. If you have holes and no locks, or locks, you have a tube type rim. If the lock boss isn't drilled, you have tubeless.

Ray he has stated he has a Midnight Special I believe, which I thought was not made until the 1980 model year. Did they sell them with a 79 engine in them?

                Just trying to get adumacated.

                            Thanks for the nice comments.

Actually, Ive rode it quite a bit w/o the rear brake. I know, im stupid.

Im waiting for someone to tell me the size/pitch of the bolts that I need, or send me some.

I have the ones for the rotor to go on, and now i need the ones that hold the calipers and stuff on.
