I just bought this 81 special and I am trying to find out if this is the original exhaust on it? Of course it doesnt run - need to do carbs and so on. Does anybody know?

Reason: Image fix
Hard to tell formt he pic at that angle and distance, but it does not look like the "megaphone" muffler that is on mine. Mine has the Yamaha stamp in it.
Mine appears to be stock as far as I can tell, here is a link to some pics the night I bought it. Notice the exhaust follows the foot peg mounts and stops short of the rear axle.
It looks like the MAC system I'm running on my bike...

If I can make at least one person smile, or pee their pants a little, or maybe spit out their drink; then my day is not wasted.
That muff looks like a Harley Road King one to me. If it has 2 nuts welded on the back side near the end of the can, there will be some Harley specs stamped in it somewhere.

I'm going to guess, "no" based on the cover photo of the Yamaha XS1100S manual but for all I know, Yamaha may have put some other pipes on that one but I doubt it.
Others have already posted "no" and I think they are correct.

P.S. Man, I wish mine looked as new as the one above.

hey wiz they are the same ones as mine and they do have baffles in them, i wonder if the carbs have to be re jetted? just going to pull the carbs for cleaning, bike has been siting for some time.
thank you !!!
ran right with the Mac system so I can't say much about tuning the carbs with this pipe. Wasn't the exhaust's fault though ... it had other non-jet related carb issues. But, having said that, popular opinion seems to hold that this is not really a performance header in a 'true sense' and re-jetting may not be necessary. These muffs are baffled but plenty loud and growley, Mr Crowley
This is the only currently US made 4/2 pipe still being made for the XS1100 so I bet a lot of guys are running them and could offer their experience on jetting for it ??

I'm running a 78 engine with 79 carbs... but there was no rejetting done with the MAC system... It still has the stock configuration and I'm pretty certain you have the same exhaust on yours, that I have on my bike...
I don't want to jinx myself here... but it's been a pretty sweet set-up... great gas mileage and plenty of power when I need it...

I posted something about this the other day... I'm having to use a brake pedal from a Virago because there wasn't enough travel with the MAC system to use the stock pedal...
Do you happen to know if your pedal is stock? or did it have to be altered to accomodate the pipes?
