  • California XSives "Yosemite" Rally

Hey guys, I am putting together the Rally for this year and have decided to try Kings Canyon-Sequoia this year. The KOA in Midpines pissed me off, several guys sought motels anyway, and the Coarsegold KOA is expensive. I am playing with June 12-14 or June 19-21. Here are the amenities in Grant's Grove:
    http://www.sequoia-kingscanyon.com/cabins.html
I plan to make ressies as soon as I get a feel from the brethren as to when the dates work best.

Moderators, I will start a "Rally" thread after I see that the boys have seen this.

    I vote for the 12-14

In the slightest chance... that someone might want to attend the MotM AND the Yosemite rally...

Okay... so that would be me daydreaming that there would be the slightest chance I could do both... at least I know I get to do one of them... I hope...

        A worthy destination!

Having visited Grant Grove and the Caverns with my parents when I was a kid (was I ever?) I can say with authority that this is a great place. Will I make the rally? Unclear at this point but I'd sure like to.

          I'm there....

Hey LoHo,,,glad to see you are planning a rally. Either date works for me since us teachers are off at that time. The earlier is better though since summer school starts right after the second date. I will try and bringup the San Diego crew and contact Garth Xs, Test bike dummy, The Wiz, 3Phase, Planedick, and others about the rally. I think there is a Good KOA in the Sequoia area. SO, plan on at least a couple of SD folk up there. If there is an interest I could run a rally in San Diego late summer, early fall. Say hello to your son and wife. Last years rally was great just hangin' with the Xsives. Tent site is fine and simple for me. Regards, Mike in Sun Diego

            Koa?

            Let's plan on June 12-14.

The mention of a KOA sparked this search. There is a KOA near Lake Isabella, which is riding distance to Kings Canyon and some other spots. This KOA allows fires and has the standard KOA stuff. The Grant Grove campground is in the park and is a more scenic locale. The KOA is cheaper and might be easier group up in. The KOA is more of a foothill location rather than the mountain location.

So, weigh in with your opinion: KOA in Lake Isabella, or cabins in Grant Grove?

Actually, the KOA is quite a ways south, almost to Bakersfield. There is a KOA in Visalia, but it is right on 99 and is in the middle farm land without much else around.

                  Koa

I would imagine that all the KOA places have the same rules. Those of us that stayed in a motel had to pay $6 everytime we went in to visit plus all the other problems experienced by Lo Ho and others.

Planedick, I assume that is true, but it also depends on how enthusiastically the rules are enforced, and if we stay near Lake Isabella, we will all be camping in the same spot. The Grant Grove cabins are reasonable, and one can buy up or down depending on desired comfort. The KOA in Coarsegold wanted $125 a night for a cabin with no facilities, bathroom, etc, just a wooden tent with electricity, really. Staying so far south changes the riding, but would also allow a trip over the Sierras to 395 and the sites along that fabled hiway. The LI KOA has fire rings, so a campfire with real fire is possible; the site also mentions a Pub on premises.

You guys think about it and I'll reconnoiter these spots in the next couple of weeks to get a real feel for what's up. The two things I fear are that Grant Grove will be a big, crowded tourist mess, and that the Lake Isabella KOA will be a dry, barren dirt patch in the middle of nowhere.

One thing's for sure...if we use the KOA, I'm bringing my own garbage can.

Okay... it sounds like there might be a decent story in there somewhere...

Calaveras State Park, North of Yosemite?

                        How about this? http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=551

It's on Route 4, and we could still ride Yosemite if we like (since we haven't really done that yet).

                        Any other ideas?

Kat: Last year at the Yosemite/Midpines KOA, I was cooking dinner and dragged the plastic trash can from about forty feet away over to the area I was cooking. The guy who runs the KOA drove up in his golf cart, walks into our gathering, and grabs the can. "This is for everybody!", he growled as he took it back the forty feet to its rightful location. No "Hey guys, could you put that back?", or "Excuse me, but you are going to return that, right?" Just grabbed it and left, despite the fact that everyone camping in that section was sitting in or around our camp, waiting for food. Earlier, they had sent a teenage gal over to figure out who was staying and who had ridden in from a nearby motel, so that the visitors could pay a $6 visiting fee. So this year, since they wanted to collect 30-36 bucks for "visitors" last year, I'm going to make sure they don't get the $1000+ we paid last year. And I'm bring my own plastic trash can for camp.

Ever tried the spring-loaded collapsible lawn/leaf thingies with a black plastic bag inside? Would be much easier to pack and haul than a plastic trash can.

I went to Kings Canyon when I was a kid, and I still have some of the Sugar Pine Cones that are about 14" tall from that trip. It's absolutely beautiful there! I wish I wasn't so far away now

                            Site choice

We, of the XS clan, do hereby nominate the great "LoHo" to search out and claim the best land that the rally needs. Since you are willing to sweat out the details and plan the event I am sure your decision will be the best. Any site is fine and members can spend accordingly. We just want to hangout, see fellow members, BS, drink, ride a bit, etc. So, pick out what you think is best and the clan will follow. Good luck searching and see ya soon, Mike in Sun Diego

                              LoHo and the KOA experience...

LoHo I forwarded your "schpill" to KOA corp and Midpines KOA...
I have to agree, there is excuse for such contempuous behaviour - he could've been a LOT nicer with his approach...
