  • How much would you pay for this??

Since this bike already sold on ebay, I didn't list in in the for sale forum. I was going to take a look at the bike before bidding but it sold with buy it now the same day it was listed. (I will not bid on a bike until it see it up close and have a chance to ride it. I have looked at a few cars on ebay that looked good in the pictures but looked like my 8 year old son painted them when seeing them in person.) With all of the work the guy said he put into it, it seemed like an ok price. The owner said that the bike has no problems at all and has a clear title. He owned it for 6 months and put 2500 miles on it. How much would you have paid for this?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3AIT&viewitem=

The guy's feedback looked a little shady also. Apparently sold a different bike two times...had 2 feedbacks for the same exact bike??

Well, IMO $950 was a good deal for whoever got this one. I paid $500 for mine, and it wasn't running, needed brakes and tires, has a split in the seat, and needed a few other things done to it. I would say even $1500 would have been a pretty good deal on this one. JMHO

There are always trade offs ..

I think I'm pretty good at spottin' a deal when I see one, and I have bought them for between 200 and 700 bucks (not counting the one I bought in
'79) ... always needing some kind of work done. But it can jump up and bite you .... or it can reward you. I have spent upwards of 3000 dollars gettin' one good enough to run and be enjoyably streetable and probably would have been way better off to pay more for one that needed less ... there can be those unpleasant surprises in store for the uninitiated .... don't ask me how I know .... it's also worked the other way a few times too .... I like the ones with fewer aftermarket mods ... the more original; the better ... so my advice:

If you just wanna ride and not wrench .... spend a bit more for one that has most of the bugs worked out ... 1200 to 1700 is not unreasonable for a real good one .... find a reputable member here that has one for sale ...... OR

If you want to twist a few bolts or spray paint and enjoy the challenge .... it can be rewarding and fun ... then go ahead and take a chance ... I've made the transition from rider only to rider/wrench and have learned these machines a little at a time as I have struggled along with my own.... thanks mostly to the unselfish people on this site ... it's an awesome resource ... probably couldn't have been done as well or even at all without 'em

Primered, aluminum all oxidized, quite a bit of rust, and naked... $500-$600 tops for me. I realize MAC exhausts blue fast, but that bike looks like it is running WAY lean. Everything he talks about... how he did so much to that bike... was just normal stuff you'll have to do on any of them.

          Not too impressed. Sorry.

I would agree that all the work stated is pretty routine stuff. Most of it I would do to any used bike just to be safe anyway. I thought the 80's special had slotted front disk like my 81.

A used helmet? To me that is like a used profolactic device. You don't know where its been or what it did there. Way to much ridin on that piece of gear to buy used.

Also like my bikes more stock for that kind of money. Sayin ready for your paint choice seems like a slick way of sayin "I'm to cheap to put a finish coat on it and will let you pay for that".

I paid a little more than that for mine and it is/was 100% stock except the seat, and finish is in good condition including paint.

Thanks to everyone for the input. When I first saw the listing, I thought it might be worth around $750. The owner said he would part it out before selling it that cheap and that he wouldn't go below $900. I thought it was at least worth a look because it is not far from my house. After it sold on ebay, I thought I might have let "the one" get away. After reading your comments, I'm glad I didn't just bid on it. Sandpaper and a coat of primer can hide a lot of rust...until it bubbles up again later. From all of the oxidation on the aluminum, it looks like the bike had a hard life. I do kinda like the black primer rat rod look though. I know I'll find "the one" sooner or later. (Hopefully sooner.) Thanks again.

You will. They are out there, all over the place. Do your research and you'll be sure to get a fun bike. Even if it requires a bit of work, these things are a blast, and thanks to the old-school mechanics of them, they are really easy to wrench on.

                    Happy hunting!

I actually posted that one in the for sale part of the forum myself!! It's kinda far away and I'm not real keen on doing transmission work. Also, what's up with the red badging and blacked-out engine? I thought it might have been a motor out of a MNS, but the red badging??

I was kind of thinking about this one myself...

John and I have talked about getting a bike up that way and keeping it at a buddy's house in Maine...
But not this time of year...
and the seller said the price was negotiable which means maybe get it for around $100? Not a bad deal...

As for the red badges... maybe they suffered from the same peeling fate that a lot of ours are suffering from and he just went with a paint color he likes?

Only if you lived in one of those really tiny states that you compare... oops. Sorry.. People around here take off for a day ride and put that many miles on.

There are probably SEVERAL people that would help you do the transmission and work for food and beer. Lots of people have been scared and tackled it alone.. and done fine. I sure wouldn't let THAT scare me away from one. Worst case scenario... you sell A PART off of it and make your money back.. lol.
