Brake pedal identification help needed

I'm running a Mac 4 -2 system on Something Special... The way the system is set up, she needed a different brake pedal than stock as the stock pedal didn't allow any travel...
Here's a pic of what she came with when we got her...



I'm cleaning her up and would like to get a new one... anybody have an idea what this is from?

If you need more pics... I can do that...

Kat,

Have you considered taking a stock pedal and bending it to suit? I'm sure with a bit of heat and a gentle nudge you could shape your own with out ruining a good stock pedal.

We had toyed with the idea... but I wonder about the chrome if we did that... Wouldn't it tend to chip or peel with the heat?

This pedal works perfectly (I think it might be off an early 80s Virago) as far as the shape... it just doesn't look all that great...

I'm open to alternatives... including bending a stock pedal... I'm sure we have one or two (at least) around here somewhere that we could experiment...

I just want it to be shiny...

Yes, you would want to be gentle with the heat and the bending.

Send that one out for re-chroming!

How expensive can that be?

That's not a bad idea, Paul... thanks! This one has some pretty deep scratches on it in some places that might make that a no go, though...
I suppose if worse comes to worse... I can take a stock pedal... bend it and then have it chromed...

Of course.. you know, if I chrome anything... it'll make the part next to it look shabby... and then one thing will lead to a thousand others... then it would eventually look like AKMac's Chrome Queen... hmmmmmmmm

Rechroming is quite expensive from what most folks have stated!

I just looked at the microfiche, and the 83 XV920 DOES look very similar to yours, it has a prominent bend near the shaft area. Perhaps you can look on Ebay and see some examples/photos of some being sold, might find a match!?

I found a couple of them from different Virago models on E-bay that are inexpensive enough to play around with... so not a bad idea TC... thanks!

Hi Kat,
my cheapskate streak says, if it works paint it black & be happy?
OTOH, what should work for you is the brake pedal off a Yamaha 500cc Single.
It kicks out at two right angles to clear the pipe even better than the easy curves in the pedal in your photo and it's about the same length as the stock XS11 pedal.
The pedal off an XS650 also has the double bend but it's a few inches shorter which would bring it's pad too close to the footpeg to work nice unless you have really tiny feet.

I was just telling someone that I should get a decent one without scratches and maybe just paint it black... The problem with mine... REALLY deep scratches... so I still need (want) to replace it...

I'm thinking.. (I know.. rarely.. and it's a scary thing) that if you wrapped it in rags to protect it against tool marks, you could bend one considerably without harming the chrome. Need me to come clamp it in your vice and break your table again?

Kat, I had the same issue on my 79F, the pedal would contact the pipe just enough so it bothered me. I got a pedal from a 750 special, it just arrived. It's perfect. Has a jog outward just next to the mounting boss. Clears the pipe beautifully.

I ended up getting a fairly decent Midnight Virago pedal off eBay... I haven't put it on yet... but it looks like it will work perfectly...

Now we both have other options if we need to replace one in the future... yes?

(providing, of course, the one I have that looks like it fits perfectly.. actually fits perfectly... lol)

Limited travel

Hey Kat,
I have the same situation with the Jardine Spaghetti exhaust on my 79F. I only have about 1" of travel (if that) before it hits the pipe, impeding full travel. What I did is to push in (brace) the MC plunger rod before I installed the pedal, and when I installed the it that way it still provided enough travel to allow for the proper operation of the brake w/out blocking the relief port (spooge hole).

thank you for the tip... I might check that out even though I do have the replacement pedal... We have a nice shiny stock pedal that could go on it...
