  • Paint Removal

I am striping the paint off my hop up bike frame today so the welding can be completed sooner rather then later. I strongly recommend that if you have a paint removal job to do that you skip the hardware store paint removers and go with aircraft coating remover. Check out the photos. That's how it looks at 10 minutes after application and only used 2 cups of the stuff.

    Hey Rob,

I used the aircraft spray on stuff I got at the paint store, and was very pleased how well it worked. I found many rust spiders under the OEM tank paint that I would not have suspected or found if I hadn't taken it down to bare metal!

I haven't found anything unusual under the paint yet but how would i know.... This stuff strips paint almost as fast as you can brush it on. I have not seen it in a spray can in my neck of the woods yet but if it works as good as the brush on stuff it's worth every penny. a quick wash down is all my frame needs now :-) LOOK OUT ... the hop up bike will soon be back in the works :-)

You're right, the stuff is nearly miraculous. It works just as well, if not better, on powder coat. They sell the aerosol version at Walmart and Home Depot here in Baja Canada.

Okay, Hammie, what does WD-40 do to windshields? I understand an oily substance smearing the view, but is that it?? OR does it cause the glass/plastic laminated layers to separate or such?? OR does it break down the natural rubber wipers??

No kidding Paul... even the smallest drop of this stuff starts to BURN immediately. I start at the bottom and work my way up to avoid being dripped on. I have e-mailed the lad who will be doing the welding so maybe ... just maybe the painting can be done early in the new year.

                    Hi T.C.
yes it smears the view ,and it soaks into the wiper blades and the only way to really remove it is to change wiper blades before cleaning the windshield or it keeps coming back

So I let the remover dry up on the frame overnight and removed it this morning with a course plastic scrub pad. That works well because in my sealed garage I can't be hosing the stuff off or slopping around the varsol. It looks like the first application took about 99% of the paint off right down to the steel. The areas that need a second coat are the areas where there was road grime on the frame and places I missed with the 1st coating.
I did find some lite surface rust on the steel in some places as TC had found on his fuel tank so I guess they (Yamaha) don't prep as closely as we would in their paint department.

That stuff works so good ....

... that you probably can't get it in California. Will have to bootleg it in from AZ or NV. There fewer tree huggers those states.
