  • Buyer beware?

These side covers are listed on E-bay as 79 side covers...
    Item number 140283874537

John wrote the guy and told him he thought they were from a later model (note the round mounting holes on the left side cover)... The guy wrote him back asked how to tell the difference... so John tells him... the guy writes back again and was kind of nasty...

If you want a good comparison of the early and late model standard sides... lamric posted these some time ago...

    Side cover comparison thread

At any rate... make sure it's what you want before you buy... for the $86 they're going for right now... I'd be super torqued to win the bid then find out they won't fit my bike...

      My pleasure

Do you think he's learning people skills from the guy who was trying to sell the Midnight?

This was his response to John after he had ASKED how to tell the difference...

thanks for the so called education, but I really could care less.
The title for the bike states it is a 1979.
So they are listed as 1979.
      End of story.

          Hey Kat,

Okay, I just sent this message to him:
          Hey there,

I'm the ADMIN of XS11.com, an international website of several thousand members. It came to my/our attention that you recently posted a set of sidecovers from the same XS1100 that you say these carbs came off of. The member informed you that the sidecovers were from a LATER 80-81 model XS11, not a 79, and now these carbs are ALSO from the same LATER model series. But in your reply to the sidecovers you said you didn't CARE!?
Bikes are often registered with the incorrect year listed, but also due to their age, previous owners acquire replacement parts where they can. There is a VIN# on the steering neck of the frame, as well as the clutch housing, they should match, otherwise, the engine is not OEM to the frame. There is a listing of serial numbers on our website that you can then MATCH it up with to VERIFY what YEAR/MODEL the bike you have and are parting out are from. Just wanting to help you have successful sales, and folks get the right parts they want!

            Thanks TC!

MUCH appreciated... I'd hate to see someone spend that much money and get something they can't use...

He sent a half-a**ed apology this morning basically saying that the bidders would know the difference... but I think most people here know that isn't necessarily so...

                Another Half-A$$ed reply??

                Hey Kat,

Well, here's his reply to mine, I won't bother with it anymore, Caveat Emptor!
                Dear topcatgr,

                TC,
                I did not say I don't care.
I said the frame said it was a 1979 and thats what the parts are listed as.
I realize you guys are xs1100 super fans, but in that respect, yes.. I could really care less.
I'm just a guy selling a few spare parts. I trust that whoever looks at the parts knows what they are.
tell you what, why don't you send me another ebay message telling me nicely what the parts are (in each auction) and I will post your question for all to read.
                such as,
dear cheesecake3, just to let you know, those are "such and such model/year side covers or carbs)
I will reply thank you very much and post it.
                fair enough?
I don't want to misrepresent, but then again I don't want to spend half the day researching every part I sell .
                thanks.

                - cheesecake3
I don't and I don't know if others want to do HIS work for him, so let him misrepresent and deal with any problems that ensue!?

so someone should buy them and leave negative feedback.

Sorry to say, but most of the guys on eBay have this same attitude. They could care less.

My wife once bought the Stargate SG-1 entire series from a guy on eBay (I am a big fan). The item was not received in two months, and we kept asking where it was, to which he replied "I don't have it yet". Now selling something not owned is fraud, at least here in the midwest. According ho him it isn't that way in New York state. My lawyer thought it was fraud as well. The letter wasn't well received. He did eventually refund the amount of purchase, and some of the attorney fees, but sent a rather threatening letter to me saying that he would have his way with my mother. Personally, I think he never met my mother. Point is, most of the yahoos on eBay are only in it for the quick buck or two, and could give a rip less if the customer isn't satisfied, since they will never see them face to face.
                  Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

I've sold xs parts on Ebay for years & lets face it, the xs's are hard to pin down. Most people look to the build date and they are all a year off, I think. Most people don't know what they have, special, midnight, or standard. Bike shops are sooooo helpful. Anyway it's taken me about ten years to get a good idea of what fits what, and I care. Look at the pic's, ask questions and figure it out. Look for the sellers that do it all the time, or take a part back with refunded shipping. I refund the price and one way shipping. Anyway I take pride in my 100% feedback, it's hard to keep. Any nut can mess it up for you. Some of us care about the xs riders. I've shipped all over the world and I have to say, I enjoy talking with everyone.
And rememeber anyone can list on ebay, there's no test to join. It's up to the bidder to check it out. Ebay is great, IF you know what your after.

I wrote that guy a week ago when he first listed the carbs. Told him they were 80 carbs. I was polite and said "I wasn't bitching just tring to help". He told me the same. He is now on my list!

Sometimes it's best that they're ignorant and snarly

Thing is, look at what was paid. $86 for the pair of sidecovers and $102 for a rack of carbs. There are those who have been happy to pay a lot more for a lot less.
I paid (as I remember) $40 for one sidecover that I knew was the wrong one and I made the bastard fit without too much effort. And those '80 carbs can be re-jetted if needs be and at least the plastic floats won't sink like the brass ones do.
