there's a wrinkle on that in the UK. When I was in DATA (Draftsmans & Technicians Association) in a union closed shop there was one two-faced pseudo-Christian bastard who refused to join "for reasons of conscience" but there was a rule for him, too. He had to pay equal to the union dues into the charity of his choice. Note that his conscience didn't stop him accepting union negotiated increases in wages & benefits.
