  • Watch for deer??

So I decide to go for a ride today.. and go up to Talihina, OK. I rode most of the day in the area.. got close to 400 miles for the day. This evening, I went up one of the mountains and watched the sun set..

    Going...

    Going...

    Gone...

I stayed up there for a while after that until it was actually dark.. then headed towards Talihina. I was watching for deer and such when I rounded a curve and something didn't look right. The road had a big spot "Missing".. like a big black hole in the road where you couldn't see the lines any more. Then the big black hole MOVED!.. lol. We have black bears back home and have hunted them. I have never seen anything even HALF the size of this bear before! It took up most of a lane, and sitting on the bike, I was looking at the top of it's back at the same level as my eyes.. so maybe 5 feet off the ground? The bear took off into my lane, so I swerved left into the oncoming lane. He must have been part frikkin squirrel, because it then changed it's mind and turned and headed back to the lane I was in again! I swerved hard right and passed it close enough that I could have kicked it in the ass on the way by! As I got to it, it was big enough to where it didn't have to jump or anything.. it just stepped over the guard rail! I wanted to get a pic of it.. but was afraid it would change it's mind about being scared of me.. or have a mate close by.. so just kept going. I'm not exagerating when I say that this thing was close to the size of a heffer cow... 600-700 lbs maybe?

I decided that there were worse things out there to hit than deer!!

How much are bear tags? That bruiser would make a fine rug.

That was a close one. Glad you are OK.

Those things are 2X tough. If you'd hit him he might have just walked over and gnawed on you for a bit before leaving....

      Critters after dark!

Anything goes when the sun goes down.Back in Sept a gentleman that is part of the other forum I belong to...rode up to CT on his bike all the way from Fla.for the ST owners event that was held.On his trip home he was riding the Blue Ridge Parkway near Buena Vista,VA.It was dark, just after sunset. He was riding his ST1300 when a huge black bear ran acros the road in front of him...he hit the bear and totaled the bike.Didnt break any bones but did severly sprain his left ankle...the bear was not killed and ran away.He was very lucky because no other cars were on the road except for one ahead of him..they just happened to see the accident and turned around to came to his aid.Long story short...at this time of the year extra caution is needed with critters and after dark riding. With hunting season at hand the forest rats will be running in all directions(deer).Be careful out there

LOL.. Yeah, that's what I had been thinking also. Hitting him would have just pissed him off. So laying there on the ground thinking about all the work, money, and time I have put into the bike.. gone. Thinking "Man.. I hurt all over! Can this day get any frikkin worse!?" And right then, you see the half ton of pissed off claws and teeth headed your way and think.. yup!

I had images of trying to get a photo... then later on a car coming by, seeing a camera laying in a wet greasy spot on the road by an old Yamaha.. and looking at the last pic of a close-up bear.. mouth open and claws swinging.. lol.

Considering how small I am, your bear size to me! I'd be scared if I saw you in the road too! Maybe it ate that cop that stopped you last time.

Actually I was sorta dissapointed. I thought you were gonna share that you almost hit a sasquatch. I was a letdown when I read that it was only a bear.

Actually.. I think it WAS Sasquatch.. I just thought it would be hard enough to try to sell that I saw a frikkin bear, let alone that!? lol.

And to all without a sense of humor... I'm kidding. But there was that one alien and anal probe thing I've never talked about...

                        They are here too

Last year while riding the Glendora Ridge Route between Mount Baldy and Glendora I noticed somethin out of the corner of my eye high to my left and when I looked that way I saw a big black bear comming down the steep hill toward the road and I stopped. The bear got to the road about 20 yards ahead of me and then he stopped and stood up facing me. Scared h*ll outa me, he was huge! I hit the throttle with a roar from The Pathfinder and he decided to leave. He went on across the road and down the bank to my right. I'm really glad he wasn't too hungry, as the road wasn't wide enough to just turn around and go the other way. He could have had me before I could have gotten away.

a small person driven by fear can climb far further up a tree than a bear driven by hunger or a bigger person driven by rage can reach.
