  • Acronym-mania

Several years back while working in a highschool as a Sign Language Interpreter for deaf students,I met 3 deaf girls ...sisters....Triplets no less and their Mom.Became good friends with the family. They've had no father as mom kicked him out when they were very young. He was a drug addict...so she raised them all by herself..with only her grit and faith in God.They often call me Dad and I love them as if they were mine.I dont see them but a few times every year...however not a day goes by that I dont talk with then online. It is through my online conversations that I really became exposed to acronyms. The kids now in their early 20's can talk all day long in abbreviated terms leaving alot of folks...myself included in the dark.Especially when i started online chats with them...so even though I dont use as many or as often as they have...certain wds have bcome abbriviated.Just my habit...Case in point OFC which many of you already know to mean of course. So what acronyms do you all know and use?Heres another that I use regularly...PPL...which means people...or TYVM! Which means ThankYou Very Much! So lets hear/see what other acronyms you all use...
Heres one thats a puzzle for you ICCL thats one my Father made up yrs ago...any takers as to what it means?

        Hi Madmax,
        according to WIKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...nd_initialisms
your acronyms ain't acronyms at all, they are initialisms.
For instance TTFN (ta-ta for now) is an initialism because you have to spell it out if you say it (tee tee eff enn) Whereas NATO is an acronym because it's a pronounceable single syllable word while North Atlantic Treaty Organization takes 34 hits on the letter keys plus 4 hits on the shift key. Admittedly to a deaf person communicating via keyboard the one's as quick as the other.
But what do I use? Very few, and those to get around the bad language sensor program on this list so I can say WTF even if I can't spell it out.
Incidentally, the stupid thing can only spell in American so I can correctly (in the spelling sense) call someone an arsehole in plain English.

As an ex-squid that worked for the D.O.N. My favorite was the one that the F-4 engineers slid past the screeners in the flight control manual. Functional Unit Control Knob stick. (F.U.C.K. stick, nowadays though, I think he just goes by B.O.B.).

I dont ues them. I figure if you are going to write something to someone then at least take the time and effore to spell things out. Besides, I thought that stuff was only used in the military. So, CMOF!

What you say is true...not all of these are true acronyms...some are initializations.I have a tendancy to group them in one category. As for my deaf kids they too use a mixture of each...the lines are blurred....I was on another forum and the word F.U.C.K. was not censored so that came as a bit of a surprise....although here it is censored unless its spelled in the manner that you see here.Seems that the sensor doesn't catch this one.I usually censor myself when I use the word @$$hole in this manner.

Another good military one that we used in place of "SWMBO" was "CINCH" as in "Commander IN Chief House."

                      Scram

most likely an apocryphal story but a nuclear reactor emergency shutdown system is called scram because the very first reactor had a big absorber rod held poised above the core, hanging there on a rope. In an emergency the rope would be cut by an operator who's sole job was to be ready with an axe poised over the chopping block. In the chalked diagram of the reactor layout this person was designated as SCRAM, Shutdown Control Rod Axe Man.

                        I'd Scram too

Luckily no nukes near me...but yrs ago we were downwind from 3 mile island that did have a "meltdown" of sorts...luckily it was contained and also lucky that I was actually living in Arizona when this happened even though the rest of my family was here

                          Hi Madmax,
"More people died at Chappaquiddick than at 3-Mile Island."
All nuclear reactor failures have been caused by administrative problems.
3-Mile Island by bean-counters insisting on bypassing safety procedures to get a quick start-up, Chernobyl by damnfools bypassing safety protocols to do a safety test and the ongoing phuckup at Windscale by having civil servants run the place. The only alternatives for producing large amounts of electricity without waiting for the sun to shine, the wind to blow or the tide to turn is to dam off yet another river and drown out yet another thousand family farms or to burn stuff. Look at the air pollution from burning stuff that's quietly but continuously killing folks by the mega-thousands. Their ongoing ill-health, medical costs and early deaths don't get in the papers, is all.
To paraphrase Winston Churchill on democracy:-
While nuclear power is bad, everything else is worse.
