well,I don't think anyone took my sarcasm the way I intended. I wasn't meaning to start a linux debate. Just trying to be humorous. That usually doesn't work out to well for me anyway.

The simplest way I have found to try linux is with a "live DVD" where the entire OS in run on a burned DVD, and it doesn't mess with anything on your machine. If you decide you like it, there is an option to install.

I haven't messed with linux for a long time. I did once do a ground up install of linux, compiling every package and messing with the kernel, but realized that by the time I was done, my computer would be archaic.

      Hey Randy/Scott,

Well, the few Mobo's I have all have different sized caps, but none in the range I need, so I'll be getting that RS one after double checking the size to be sure I have room for it to fit!

Ivan, your humor wasn't lost, it was appreciated, but we here at channel 11 enjoy any chance to both entertain as well as educate and inform.

One of the better jokes on the Windows OS's was one I heard/read a while back: The newest OS will be a combination of Windows CE for it's portability, ME for it's user friendliness, and NT for it's stability.

It's going to be called "CEMENT" ! Solid as a ROCK!

        Ce me nt

LOL! Windows CEMENT! I loved that video!

        http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=-6FnE6y9JIM

T.C., you won't be able to use that motherboard as an oven controller with an 85C capacitor in it, but that's about the only problem you're likely to encounter aside from a buggy vBulletin editor that arbitrarily changes the case of certain words in the body of the message (such as the word 'copyright', for example) and changes Title text to mixed case 'Ce me nt' from 'CE ME NT'.
        <exasperated look>

Ivan, your post was taken humorously, at least I thought it was funny! If it helps, I do not ever post with the veins bulging outta' my neck! I got sidetracked with a vBulletin editor/display bug and I was a little more dry and terse than usual and far more than I should have been in a non-technical forum.

        Regards,

        Scott

P.S. I'm still never going to run LINUX. It's personal.

          Well,

Sad followup ... I put the 470uF/35V RS cap in there($1.29), put the Mobo in the case, plugged in a known good PWS, connected a PC speaker to the proper connectors(D/L'd the MoBo manual from MSI) and connected the POWER switch front case connecter, and hit it and nothing! The PWS fan did not come on. I took my voltmeter and checked the Power On pins, and NO voltage coming across/thru them, so apparently like Wes said, the Volt Reg. IC probably got fried when the Cap went! Oh well, it was a fun experiment to see IF I could do it, learned a little along the way!

Thanks for the input and suggestions everyone!

The DELL Mobo I got from Ebay first in an attempt to fix that kids system turned out to be a proprietary nightmare. I've gotten it to fire up, but due to the lack of the proper ($$$) 40Ns/800Mhz RamBus ram chips...I have plenty of 45NS, but Noooo, this thing needs at least 40ns, so I can't get it up and running. I only paid $10.00 for it, and I have PLENTY of other good DDR ram chips, so I will probably just see about picking up another cheap MOBO that will run the P4/2.4/533Mhz CPU....AND will accept the DDR ram that I have!?

            TopCatGr58:

I have a KT7A-RAID Motherboard w/AMD socket A (600-800) don't remember installed on it. I used it for experimenting a few years back and has been sitting on my parts shelf for a few years. It is looking for a good home and would be just right to install in the young fellows machine. If interested send me a PM with an address to ship it to.
