  • Good day eh?

Well its been a good day for the bike, got a package from andreas (thanks again) a new old seat to replace my rags with a rotten pan, and a few tank badges. (and some jugs/pistons/rings, but thats a later project) .

Anyway so had a ride and its way good, sets me a little lower on the bike and more comfortable. Only a few sidecovers away from a complete bike now.

Later I went to dig some taters for dinner, and low and behold a miracle!!

So I got em both in the same pictures.

Moments like these are rare in life and you have to make the best of them. A potato like that is a special gift and must be treated accordingly. Its cut up and boiling in a pot of water right now and I shall consume this freak of nature and take its mutant gene's and or P-cells into my very soul......!

Thanks again Andreas and wow now I know what that blue color is really supposed to look like hehe..

There is still rust on the rear springs and the rear taillight bracket, hehhe so still a hazard. Need to pop them shocks apart and hit em with some black paint, then hit the springs with some naval jelly. It will remove the rust but doesnt mess with cruddy ole chrome much so at least they would be clean. Mabye some of the old motocross standard silver spraypaint is in order for them springs too.

Good thing bout dirt bikes is that when ya paint stuff, ya dont have to worry so much about quality.. its GOING to get torn up.. try the roost off a quad in a race where ya have to just turn your head down so your helmet visor protects ya . nothing quite like that.. thats what armor is for hehe.. the measure of paint on a frame was how many jumps it took to make the bottom shiny again.

Only problem. When I mounted that seat. It totally leaned to the right. Well its something I noticed the other day too.. if you stand behind my bike with the seat off.. and look at the 2 brackets where the seat bolts go.. where it mounts.. the right side looks normal, flat . the left side is definatly higher and looks as if the frame tube was twisted clockwise, in otherwords that seat mount bracket is not level, it is angled up a bit. I cant see any twist marks, bends or cracks anywhere on this frame but that doesnt mean it hasnt bent a lot.. Ive seen it plenty in quads and dirt bikes because of the jumping. There may come a day where I finally just get another frame and swap all my good parts Ive been working on into it and swap insurance and plates to that vin.. the old number would cease to exist.

We'll see. for now the bike goes down the road really well, since I lubed the steering and swingarm it tracks really well and the only apparant thing is when your in a left banking turn. tighter feeling that rights from the shaft I guess. Finally Ive cleared up enough issues to where I can really "feel" the bike when Im riding, and push my testing further hehe.

Also the thumping in the left footpeg that I could feel especially at lower speeds (not masked by other stuff) is gone. I guess my meddling in the Ujoint free'd it up and its not binding anymore. Bike is smoother and more stable at higher speeds. Now I would take it on the highway but no way before.

Had these in a box with note that said they were for a Special.
Kinda dumb to take a note at it's word
Check the mounting tabs on your ride.
Are they slots on both sides, slots and round holes or just round holes?
Another difference between years is the distance between the mounting slot or hole.

They are slots on both sides, I was suprised to see that they all have the rubber slip over deals on em.

Ok the mounts themselves with the rubber things on them are 6 7/8 inches on center. So that was measuring from one edge to the same edge on the next one.. and the slots are 1 1/4 inch. And some eyeballs in the flashlight out beyond where my back garden is.. crazy deer.. or possibly the spirit of the potato I ate earlier stalking me

Re: the rust on the springs. I've had great success getting the rust off of mine with simple steel wool. I have to hit them again from time to time, but no naval jelly is necessary. May take your suggestion about spray painting them into consideration as that would solve the need to redo them from time to time.

                      mro,
The side covers fit ALL of the standards, as far as I can tell. The "specials" are, almost every year IS a different part!!

Oh tell me you didn't eat the tater. I am sure that you could have seen the FACE in the tater and sold it on fleabay for a gasillion dollars and saved the USA and brought about world peace. But no I suppose you ate it didn't ya?

Just think you might even have had enough to buy side covers although that is a stretch.

That's true for the 78 and 79 standard but the 80 had round mounting holes in the top rather than slots.
