  • Max is home

Two weeks in the hosp/shop and he is finally home. After more than a few false recoveries and statements that he was healthy...I can now declare that Max has made a full recovery and for the first time in 16 months he is cured of all ills.
The oil leak turned out to be the oil drian plug.It somehow wasnt torqued to spec...all this time But the biggie was how bad the bike was running...there were dead spots in the throttle and at certain RPMs it would bog down...turned out the carbs were too lean!I went by the formula that is pretty much accepted here but it turns out that was WAAAAAY off. After installing 4 new dynojet main jets @ 138 the carbs and engine smoothed out and all dead spots and bog downs are gone!Bike idles and purrs like a kitten Engine pulls hard in all gears and RPMs without missing a beat.I also had the compression checked #1)175 #2)165 #3)175 and #4)170.So thats excellent too! Out on the highway the bike runs smooth and is as good as its ever been. Now he is ready to be taken to the XS events. The only thing he needs now is a total cosmetic clean up and repaint...next year

Indeed it has...all the ups and downs...its been quite a ride...LOL now for some smooth sailing
Paul...I'll ride right thru the winter as long as the roads are clear..I love winter riding...well at least around here in NJ..up your way I'm sure its a different story..LOL
Alan...I have been putting miles on him since I came back from the 3 day tech event at TC's home..its just that now its finally right.I am a little concerned that the formula thats used to calculate jet sizes may not be that accurate after all...anybody have any comments on this?

anybody have any comments on this?

It's just a general starting point.
Each mod and bike be a little different

Yes so i had gathered....whats interesting to note here is that i figured out my jetting for the mains to be 122.5 and the pilots raised one size to 50.In actuality the bike shop tha just fixed Max put in Dynojet 138 mains...pilots were unchanged. My concern here is even though these are a general starting point...the actual differences..in my case were waaaaaayyyy off not even close. So if I hadnt waved the white flag and taken the bike to the shop..I'd still be pulling out my hair trying to get this sorted .

                too lean

I'll be tweaking the carbs on an XJ1100 in a week or so. Right now I'm not sure of the jet sizes it has, but at 23mm float level, this bike barely runs at all, it's way too lean. The carbs have been thorougly cleaned. Gonna try 21.5 mm and see what happens. This info should be very useful.

Yes it's a damn nice bike, yes it's in REALLY good condition, yes it would be a shame to chop it, BUT damn how cool would it look with ape hangers?

You want pics ?Huh? LOL All I can say is dont give up...even though I did...LOL luckily I found a shop that not only knows how to work on these bikes but the mechanics are old enough to actually remember when they were new. You are not one with your machine until you've gone thru hell and back...fixing it that is

Phil...One further note.I have no airbox just 4 K+N Pod filters and a 4 into 1 Jardine exhaust. So the jets i have reflect this.

Thanx, Ben. This bike has an airbox and 4-1, no baffle. I'd also like to find a way to permanently plug up the YICS without taking the head off. I wish it had pods cause the XJ airbox is a major PITA.

Yes it sure is! I've had to start a fire in the igloo the past two mornings and today I'm having snow tires installed on my Maxim!
