  • Introduction

Well I've been lurking here for a couple weeks now so I thought I should formally introduce myself. I go by Varnae or C². I just recently found a 1981 XS1100 special on craigslist that I bought for $625. It needs a lot of work done to it to be road ready, but I'm looking forward to it. Being that it's my first bike I have a lot to learn. I'll probably initially have a trustworthy mechanic in Indianapolis do the work and then start learning to do things on my own.

A list of the things that need done.

Electrical - bike will turn over but I don't have any lights at all. When I initially got the bike I at least had some lights and such but then one evening I went out to turn it over and heard a pop under the seat. After the pop I had nothing. After disconnecting and reconnecting one of the wires it will now turn over again but I still have no lights or anything.

Carbs - I don't know how long this thing has been sitting. All I know is that it will turn over and if I put a hand over the intake of the carb closest to my right leg when I'm sitting on the bike, it will start up. It won't stay running for very long but it will start and that's the important part. If it's running and I give it any gas it dies. I'm sure the carbs will need cleaned, adjusted and synched. Hopefully that's all it'll take.

Brakes - They don't work at all. Probably just need to have some new fluid ran through them and be bled. At least that's my suspicion/hope.

Paint - More of a cosmetic thing but the paint on the tank is all cracked and nasty and I don't want the tank to rust. Thankfully I have a friend that said he'd so this for me. Now I just need to get some side covers so he can paint those to match (there were none on the bike when I got it). I'm going with a Midnight Blue Metallic. It looks sweet.

Tank - has a little bit of surface rust that needs to be cleaned out. This shouldn't be that hard. I'm sure it's something I can do by myself.

Tires - They're very dry rotted. I could probably get by with them for a very short time but they definitely need to be replaced.

I'm hoping to have it all done and have my license for the spring '09 riding season.

Have a great one and stay safe out there!

If you don't own a fire extinguisher, do me a personal favor and go purchase one... immediately.

Congrats on finding your bike. The XS is my first bike too, but it sounds like you have a bit more work to do on yours than I did.
I know this, because Tyler knows this.

          Welcome from the north

Congrats on your new bike. I got mine about the same time of year as you with the same goals. It took me 21/3 years to get it going. Most of it was done in March and May of this year. That's only because of the help I got from the great people on this site. With their help you should be on the road in no time.

"old tires" are dangerous on a bike. As likely to blow out as just go flat. If it happens at speed can be fatal.

It's C Squared. I'm happy now that I know that there are fellow XSer's in Indy. Hopefully we'll be able to get together and ride some time next year.

As far as the tires go, they'll be replaced before I ride on them. I could probably get by with them as they are for a short time but I wouldn't wanna take that risk and seeing as I have all winter to get everything done... that's plenty of time to save the money and have it all done by spring.
