  • Gas tank dents

So I have been off work for a few days and have been doing all kinds of random things I've been putting off. I buffed the tank and side covers with Scratch Out to get rid of some of the scratches. I can actually see the red flakes in the paint now, and all the dents showed up better too! I have one of those infomercial dent remover kits that I have used on several cars with so so results and thought I would give it a try. It worked great!!! I removed just about every dent I could find except 2. One was a deep crease, it did make it a lot less noticeable, and the other had a nick in the paint, and from past experience it WILL pull off paint, so I left that one alone. I am very pleased with the results. So, if you do it, wax first, or the "glue" will stick to the paint and it is a pain to remove. Maybe it can save you from repainting your tank!

        dent

I have a dent about the size of a half dollar in the side of my special tank. I tried the old hot glue on the end of a wood stick. I got it to come out a little, but then I just ripped the paint off. The spot where the dent is makes a real good place to put a racing sticker. Problem solved for now! I also have a small dent in my standard tank, but i'm not too worried about it.

I might have one small dent in my XJ's tank but its not nearly as big as what you had.... this is a very interesting idea.Nvr thought much abt those infomercial products. As for the scratch out stuff ...I have lots of those...might be worth a try before trying to repaint. Thanks for sharing this info.

            Nobody else has dents?

            Hi Blue,
never ones that were on painted parts that didn't also need a re-paint and those I filled with bondo.
I also have some dented chrome that I have been too chicken to attempt fixing because other times I tried they looked even worse. Brand name of your wonder-product please?

              Re: Nobody else has dents?

The brand name is the *"The Ding King!"* as seen on those early morning hour infomercials. I bought it at a Walgreens about 5 years ago for $20. Probably find it at a CVS, Wal-Mart or Target. I still have the original Black Red paint, but I wouldn't try it on a repaint or chipped paint, like bikerphil was saying, it will take off paint. So a good wax first at minimum.

I guess another good tip is Scratch Out will remove the burnt on rubber marks from you boots on the chrome exhaust, you know, by the kick stand!

I thought I'd throw this out there...Easy Off oven cleaner, worked for me to get the boot marks off my Valkyrie's exhaust. Just have to spray it on and let it work for a few minutes on the hot pipes and wipe off with a clean cloth. No scratches to worry about.

I thought that would work too but I never tried it.

                            Hi Dave, Blue,
caustic oven cleaners work great to get stuff off chromed steel but you'd hate what it does to aluminum or to paint.
Or to your mother's kitchen floor when the stainless steel pot you have full of caustic soda to soak a BSA cast iron head turns out to have it's handles held on by aluminum rivets.

                              Thanks Montreuw_Blue

I have a couple of Standard tanks and a Special. All have small dents tailor made for that device. Right after I got hold of the bikes I wondered if those gismo's would work.
Thanks for the post. Glad to know I won't be the first to tear the paint off either!
                              Thanks again,
