Maybe time for a fence and security lights?
A buddy of mine who's older than I am recently has had some problems with young guys hanging out in front of his house and partying, leaving a mess and pissing in his bushes. On his block 4 houses have teenagers and a couple that are around 21 years old. About a month ago the parents a house away took off for the weekend and the kids decided to have a party. 4 punks crashed the party and caused a small fight and one broke out the front window on the house.
He walked out to the sidewalk in front of his house to see what was going on. He was not unprepared
The 4 crashers were running right at him. Probably thought that someone had called the cops. First one less that 15 feet away yelled at him a profanity and to get out of they way or he'd kill him.
So he calmly pulled out his pepper spray and nailed the first 3 pretty good before the pepper spray sputtered and just a little got to the 4th guy. They were lucky that they kept going, as he had something more serious in his other hand. When the cops finally arrived one of them told him he should not have sprayed em and should just let the “police” handle it. He said OK next time someone is threating to kill me I'll whip out my cell phone and tell them to stop and wait for a half hour or so for the cops to arrive.
I avoid altercations when ever possible and don't believe in fighting. Have not been in a ruckus of any kind for decades, but do believe in self defense.
Moral of the story is be prepared, and there is no such thing as a fair fight.
Yelling a profanity at the guy to leave your property was a no no...
Should have told him with words any jury would construe as reasonable to leave and then if he does not and threatens you....

What about your daughter? He 'knows where you live'...
May just wait for you to leave one day, with her home alone...One thing to risk yourself(he could've been armed)but to risk him returning to make you sorry by hurting someone you care about?...
Not that I'm taking his side, but...People are crazy these days, they think they are entitled to do whatever they want, wherever they want, and unfortunately, thanks to our legal system, they're right!
When people like this are denied the ability to do as they please, they pick the easiest target and take it out on them. Someone like this guy isn't too bright to start with, he doesn't have thoughts deep enough to keep him from acting out. He'll sit in the interrogation room trying to justify his actions by saying you, 'Disrespected' him...by then your daughter could be dead...or worse...
He has more rights in this situation than you do, sad as that is.
Good fences make good neighbors-that's the saying.
For me, Good fences, and a couple of large unfriendly dogs, loose to roam the entire yard, make good neighbors. And tend to deter big MOFO's from trying to open the gate, that one that's kept LOCKED at all times. You say this happens all the time because you live between 2 bars?

Time to invest in some 6' chain link and a couple of JYD's.
I remember a story where two kids were in someone else's yard and shooting at these other people's chained up dog with BB guns. One finally got too close and the dog bit him. You and I would think FINALLY.. poetic justice. But the homeowner got sued and lost. Figure that one out...
TodTry your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

Hey Tod,
I think the BBgun incident would be different vs. his own yard WITH it totally fenced in, WITH the proper warning signs regarding GUARD DOG on duty, KEEP OUT.
The BBgun dog WAS antagonized, however, the CHAIN apparently wasn't strong enough to KEEP the dog secure and UNDER CONTROL, and so when it got loose, it then (I'm assuming here) left the confines of it's own YARD, and bit the kids, thereby being deemed a vicious dog and OUT of CONTROL...not on a leash/chain strong enough to control/contain it!?
I do agree that it's a BS situation, the kids got what they deserved with the dog bite, just sad that the dog owner paid the price!

A couple of years ago one of my best friends (he was a groomsman at my wedding) who lived just outside a little town called Donald in Oregon chased away 3 punks who were trying to break into a neighbors farmhouse. He fired a shot into the air with his shotgun and told them to leave.
Now Gayle (my friend) was well armed and proficient with firearms (I helped him build an NRA compliant rifle range on his property) and he lived down a long private drive in the country. He was the nicest guy you could ever meet, give the shirt off his back and all.
The three guys that he drove off came back later and snuck down to his house and broke down the door. They shot Gayle in the back and killed him as he reached his bedroom (the shotgun was there)...they shot and killed his wife but not before she produced a .357 and wounded one in the face.
They did all this in front of his 3 year old grandaughter and her great-grandmother, and they told them they better not call the police as they exited.
They were picked up by the cops later that day, and charged with the murders, the youngest was 16, all gang members from Salem, Oregon...miles away.
The reason they gave? Gayle had "disrespected" them.
If you want to act the badass, you better be the badass, get a concealed weapoms permit, and be proficient with your chosen weapon. Be ready at all times to defend yourself with deadly force. Even then you may lose if it comes down to you or the badguys, 'cause the goodguys don't always win, even when they're ready for trouble. If you can't be the badass, then try being polite.
As for me, I'm polite (with a concealed 9mm in my belt). And if anyone ever threatens my life or the lives of those I love, God help them.Last edited by Guy_b_g; 08-20-2008, 05:24 PM.Guy

I agree, we should walk softly and carry a big stick.
Sometimes it is hard though to contain yourself and not do something stupid. Especially when it involves your own stuff being threatened, let alone your own peoples.
Neighbor had a dog that kept chasing my kids in our yard. Called them several times and politely asked them to keep it out of our yard and away from my kids. They said he is just a pup (60+ pounds of pup) and wouldn't hurt anyone. When he got teeth around my youngest's throat, I started beating on it with a yard long piece of 2" schedule 60. Then I called the neighbors and told them next time that dog sets foot on my property, its life is forfeit. They said, its just a pup and wouldn't ever hurt anyone. I called the sheriff out and the deputy said that since I wasn't in city limits, and it was my property and my kids, he wouldn't have called the neighbors if he were in my shoes.
The dog took a 12 gage to the face at about 10 feet the next time he came to our yard and tried to bite me.
The down side is that I really hurt the neighbor kids. That was their family pet, and I could see the pain in their eyes. That will never leave me. Sometimes there is no right answer.
Some resolution came when they accused my dog of biting their kid on the neck. My dog is a 12 pound cocker spaniel runt that is terrified of squirrels, toads, and blowing leaves. Their kid would have had to lay down on the ground with a doggy treat on his neck to even get my do close to them. That was funny. The sheriff thought so as well.Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.
