    First ride

My first motorcycle after three mini bikes was a 1972 i think DT100
for about five years I beat it to death and it was there every morning asking for more. Then a 1971 all dirt 360 punched out to about 400 man that was a lot of power to do what I loved to do ride wheelies. After about three years 2nd gear went out and I sold it and decided to buy a street bike. My buddy had got a 79SF and he let
me ride it and then I knew what I was getting. I found a 1980 midnight
with 1200 miles on it at a dealer I took it for a ride and they asked
me to come into the office ther they told me why it had a 81 front
wheel on it. A guy had bought it there and was trying to out run the cops around a curve and went off he did not make it his wife brought it in to have them help her get rid of it the frame and engine and one side cover was ok so they put it back together and I bought it. I sold it three years later an bought wedding rings then about 1990 I ran on to another 1980 special for $1500 with a jammer I thought that would keep my front end down I was wrong
i kept it for a year and sold it. 2008 i bought a harley wide gliude
put money in it and in it and in it still not enough power so sold it and found the 79sf i have now from a 72 year old mans son that had got it in his dads will he said he would not ride it it had to much power he road harleys. So $1850 it was mine and is in my will to go to my son when the time comes. Xs11 forever !!!!! Buckmaster79.

Mine was in April of 2008 when I bought mine from a friend. Got it out of the shed it had sat in for years (good care taken when storing it) and remember thinking "has good pull through the mid range and up top" and also noting how below 3k rpm it was not all that strong. But what a good looking bike!

At the time i owned a V Strom 1000 with loads of low end and an ST1300, which is a heckuva strong engine all around, with an 8500 rpm red line just like the XS1100.

But I wasn't buying the XS for the giddy-up, although I feel the XS is entirely adequate in power for any situation. That's not damning with faint praise, it's the reality compared to newer bikes. 80-85 hp and 55-60 ft/lbs at the rear wheel is about what we get in a 605 lb. bike.

It gets compliments everywhere it goes, and that is what I like most about the XS since day one... It looks like a motorcycle should, and folks appreciate that in this day and age.

BTW, ZRX carbs have the same spacing as the XS11... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35462

Stopped into a dealer 1979, just to look, he looked out the front window and saw my 77 XS650 with the heavy silver flake Emron, said he'd make me a deal I couldn't refuse. He did, gave me $400 more than I had in the 650 and made the SF $3399. The set up man said take it easy as I took it out of the work shop at rush hour, trying to find a space where I could pull out, then a space, hit the throttle and sideways I was until hitting the brakes to keep from bouncing of the rear bumper of the car ahead. LUV IT !!!!!

First time riding an XS11 was the one I bought as a test ride. Got it on the highway and was not impressed with top end power. Decided the bike was good in the low end power, and still feel the need to open her up every now & then. Only bike I make continuous improvements to.

            Not a Special, but a '79 F.
Bought an RD 400 advertised in the paper 'as is' around 20 years ago. A few years later, I saw an ad in the paper worded similarly, this time for an XS1100. Absolutely loved the bike, but it kept breaking up around 4K RPM. Loved the size, style, and power. Took it to a couple of 'mechanics' who had no clue how to fix it. Of course, it's an easy fix, they ( me, too) were unaware of the weak wires on the mech. advance. Never got it running right due to this issue, so ended up selling it about 5 years ago on the recommendation of my 'mechanic'. Long story longer, had a coupla bikes after the XS, but always missed my XS. Got another one March 2013, and LOVE it. I'll never sell.
